Beautiful Collision is more than just a band, but a bringing-together of two worlds. The quality of lyrical content that would normally be found exclusively in the Christian market is molded together with the musical influence and skill more commonly found in the secular music scene. This hybrid of uplifting lyrics and melodic, well written music is blended together to form what is truly a beautiful collision of two typically separate worlds.Since the summer of 2007, they have been developing and critiquing their style which has become a sound unto its own. The energy-filled rock is accented with hints of jazz and salsa. Blended together with the unique vocals of guitar player/singer, Adrian Perez, this sound is captivating and intense. Often taking advantage of the raw, organic feel of the acoustic guitar, Adrian’s intricate writing style shines through his skill with the instrument. Adrian’s brother, Jason, takes the energy of the music to its full potential with a fierce style of drumming that is powerful and dynamic. With the melodic and groove-oriented bass playing of Jordan Baker, the distinctive sound is tastefully brought to fruition. The band was formed in mid 2007 when Jordan saw Adrian performing an acoustic set at an open mic night in a coffee shop in Algonquin, IL. He was captivated by Adrian’s unique vocals and dynamic writing style. After the set, Jordan introduced himself and they started talking and decided to get together and jam sometime. Adrian indicated that his brother Jason played drums and could jam with them too. The first time they got together, Jason was visiting friends in Mexico (where Adrian and he lived for 10 years), so it was just Adrian and Jordan. There was instant chemistry both musically and personally! They felt as close as brothers after only a few hours and stayed up until 2am sharing life stories and getting to know one another. By the next jam session, Jason was back in town and the three decided to jam and see if they could write a song or two. After only a few minutes of playing together, the three knew it was a great fit. They began practicing more regularly and developing their skills in writing and performing. The three played their first show at a local festival called "Bandslam" in northern Illinois under the name "Yaneidi" (Adrian and Jason’s sister's name). It was a mediocre performance, but it caught peoples' attention and they got great constructive feedback. They tweaked their sound a bit and hit the basement again to adjust some songs and write some new ones. They performed at a few small coffee house type venues as Yaneidi for awhile learning quickly that a name that is hard to read and pronounce probably isn't a great band name. They played one show as "Rejected Stone" before finally deciding on Beautiful Collision. It is under this name that they have performed in many well known venues in the Chicago land area including The Elbo Room, Penny Road Pub and The Brat Stop. They also won Guzzardo Performance Music’s 2008 Emerging Artist Competition in Rockford, IL.“EP” is their first release and was recorded at Chicago Recording Company and produced by Beautiful Collision, Chris Steinmetz and Mike Perez. $14.29 EarthBeat! Records celebrates its 20th anniversary with a compilation drawn from both the EarthBeat! and Music for Little People labels, originally issued on albums between 1989 and 2002, focusing on some of the best-known songs of the folk revival and the civil rights movement of the 1960s. There are stirring performances by unusual combinations of artists, starting with Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," performed by Willie Nelson, Maria Muldaur, Tom Paxton, and John McCutcheon. Other notable folk, blues, and soul performers include Richie Havens (on a medley of spirituals), Taj Mahal ("Follow the Drinking Gourd"), and Wilson Pickett ("Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down"). A cappella groups the Persuasions and Sweet Honey in the Rock are featured, and there are narrations spoken by actors Ted Danson and Danny Glover. Although the music was recorded primarily in the 1990s, it speaks to a continuing tradition of activism and the songs that have accompanied it in earlier decades, and that seems to be the point -- that the movement for freedom, extending back to the abolitionism of the 19th century and the labor struggles of the Great Depression, and which found mass recognition in the '60s, continued to progress through the end of the 20th century, singing hopefully all the while. ~ William Ruhlmann

EP songs
$15.85 As a final album, Fanny's Rock & Roll Survivors, originally released in 1974, is not as bad as the reviews of the time made it out -- specifically in the United States (in the U.K. the album was received quite well, both critically and commercially). For instance, it does contain their most successful charting single with "Butter Boy," which reached number 29 in the Billboard Hot 100. That said, it does reveal a band struggling to maintain its identity in the midst of tremendous pressure. For starters, founding member and guitarist June Millington left before the album was recorded, as did drummer Alice de Buhr. Bassist Jean Millington replaced her sister with former Detroiter Patti Quatro, sister of Suzi, and drummer Brie Brandt (who left immediately after the recording and was replaced by Cam Davis for the band's final tour). In addition to the personnel changes, the band left Reprise where they had recorded their four previous offerings, for Neil Bogart's Casablanca imprint. Rock & Roll Survivors was produced by Vini Poncia, a house producer for the label, and reflected its owner's desire for sheeny, tight, slick, studio glitz. While it is easily the band's most polished and commercial sounding record -- Poncia was clearly trying get the band to sound like Heart, which didn't work -- it falls emotionally flat in several places despite excellent songs. With more emphasis on keyboards and drums and less on guitars, the pure, hard rock power of recordings such as Mother's Pride -- produced by Todd Rundgren -- is lost. Quatro wrote two of the best songs on the set in "Rockin' All Nite Long" and "Beggar Man" (she wrote four altogether). The cover of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together," is a radical rearrangement and changes the song's meaning but really comes across. Of course there is the infamous June Millington-penned single with a faux doo wop "wha-wha-wha-oo" ...
