2009 album
$15.64 By 2009, the duo of Llandel Malave Veguilla (Wisin) and Juan Morera (Yandel) were well established as reggaeton royalty. While Wisin & Yandel professed a desire to return to their mid-1990s, pre-reggaeton explosion style on their seventh record, LA REVOLUCION, their heady fusion of disco-era Latin R&B and up-to-the-moment street-hop continues to evolve unabated. It's Wisin & Yandel's show, and they open it with proper bravado on the title track, injecting a sly romantic undercurrent to what could have been a straight boasting banger. Proof positive of the Puerto Rican pair's prowess comes on "Mujeres In The Club" where 50 Cent slows his drawl to a mesmerizing crawl, pocketing his swagger, simply augmenting a slyly seductive single.
Released just weeks after their previous album, Los Extraterrestres won Billboard's 2009 Latin Rhythm Album of the Year award, La Revolucion finds reggaeton superstars Wisin & Yandel on a serious roll. After the opening title track suggests a futuristic concept album on the scale of Don Omar's 2009 release, iDon, La Revolucion slips into a much more standard album for the duo, which is hardly a disappointment. Bouncing between grand club numbers and smooth ballads, the overall structure is familiar to all returning fans, but just like Omar in 2009, the duo have become fans of Euro-disco synths and urban dance music. The slick "Quitame El Dolor" stomps the ground like a Flo Rida cut, while "Mujeres in the Club" creeps and swaggers in such a G-Unit way that special guest 50 Cent sounds right at home. On the other hand, a handful of cuts -- "Perfecto" with Yaviah and Ivy Queen being the best -- prove that the duo can still create vital and undiluted reggaeton as they please. Purists might balk at how they choose to do so, but La Revolucion is more about expanding the duo's sound while making sure that high quality control is still in effect. [This album was also released as a two disc set with a DVD of bonus material.] ~ David Jeffries

| | El Trono De Mexico Hasta Mi Final CD (2009)
2009 CD music
$9.75 On Hasta Mi Final, the Duranguense group El Trono De Mexico builds upon the success of their Il Divo cover version and makes it the title track to one of their most romantic albums. Although this effort isn't exclusively composed of love songs, they do dominate with the uplifting "Por Amor a Ti" and "Te Quiero Tanto" -- featuring special guest Diana Reyes - being further highlights. The banda hit "Leonardo Reyes" is performed in a winning uptempo style by the group, and while the album seems a bit short, there is no filler. Fans won't be disappointed, and seeing as how "Hasta Mi Final" is the Duranguense wedding song of choice in 2009, neither will all the brides-to-be. ~ David Jeffries

| | Ugly Casanova Sharpen Your Teeth CD (2002)
2009 album
$10.35 The story behind Sharpen Your Teeth is odd yet plausible: a mentally unstable character named Edgar Graham (calling himself Ugly Casanova) met up with Modest Mouse, followed them around on tour, recorded some songs, gave the recordings to labels, and then mysteriously disappeared. Songs on tapes discovered by Sub Pop were later recorded by Issac Brock of Modest Mouse in hopes that Graham would resurface. The first solo record from the singer/guitarist, Sharpen Your Teeth, cuts into raw indie rock with spells of country and folk, while allowing Brock to explore a varying scope of sounds. He gets help from Brian Deck (whose production credits include Tortoise and the Sea and Cake), Tim Rutili of Red Red Meat, and Pall Jenkins of the Black Heart Procession. Ranging from heartfelt acoustic numbers ("Cat Faces") to outright bizarreness with grating vocals ("Diamonds on the Face of Evil"), there's no doubt that the mood sometimes coincides with the enigmatic Graham. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

2009 songs
$10.59 Joe Veras's VIDA was designed for the dance hall. Led by electric steel string guitar, songs like "Aferrado," "Si La Ve," and the title track are musically intensive, and inspire complicated dance moves rather than romantic introspection. The 2008 album incorporates a more contemporary sound as well, adding electric guitar, accordion, and elements of merengue to the mix.

2009 album
$14.19 Award winning singer, songwriter and harmonica player Michael Tracey is a quickly rising star on the Northwest contemporary blues and R&B landscape. Michael found his first harmonica at age 12. Once he picked it up, he couldn't put it down. He taught himself to play harmonica and sing listening to locally broadcast blues programs on public radio. In 2007, Michael was crowned champion of the Northwest Harmonica Championships held in Veneta Oregon. Later that year, he was a featured performer at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival as part of the annual Harmonica Blow-Off. Performing there with the house band, Michael wowed the audience with his unique and powerful vocal and harmonica prowess. In 2008, Michael formed his own band, Michael Tracey & the Hi-Tones made up of an all star cast of players. The band recently released their debut album entitled, Got To Get Away. Michael entered one of the songs on this album in the Willamette Valley Music Festivals annual New Singer/Songwriter Contest and was awarded first place.Although Michael is an accomplished songwriter and harmonica player, he has also earned the reputation for having a powerful and soulful vocal style all his own. In 2009, Michael received an honor which he has said is more precious to him than any other he's ever received when he was voted Best Male Blues Vocalist at The Rainy Day Blues Society's annual "Rooster Awards" held in Eugene. His band also picked up the award for Best Contemporary Blues Band, and his Saxophone player, the very talented Paul Biondi, won the award for Best Instrumentalist. Michael Tracey is a rare, deep, and unique talent on the Northwest Blues Scene. He looks forward to seeing where his musical passions take him as he continues to work towards refining all aspects of his craft and defining the blues in his own unique way.
