As on WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS, it is the more restrained material that revealed most about Cocker's interpretative talents; sensitive readings of Cohen's "Bird On A Wire" and John Sebastian's "Darlin' Be Home Soon" are particularly impressive. But thanks to the dense, chunky production by Leon Russell, the rockers satisfy as well, making JOE COCKER! one of Cocker's best and a precursor to the popular pub rock of the '70s.
Still riding high on the American success of his debut album and show-stopping appearance at the Woodstock festival, Joe Cocker hastily recorded a follow-up with his Grease Band and guest musicians. Remarkably, it sustained the quality of his debut, with Cocker barnstorming his way through Russell's instant classic "Delta Lady," "Hitchcock Railway," and a reworking of songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles.
Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); Chris Stainton, Leon Russell (guitar, piano, organ); Henry McCullough (guitar); Alan Spenner (bass guitar); Paul Humphries, Bruce Rowland (drums).
Rolling Stone (2/21/70, p.50) - "Joe Cocker's delightful second album is ample proof that the imagination that transformed a song so fixed in our minds as 'With A Little Help From My Friends' has not run out of things to do, nor fallen into the trap of 'stylization'..." Q (7/00, p.130) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Just as tasty [as his debut], cementing his US standing....Reappraisal is long overdue. Now remastered, here's the ideal opportunity." Record Collector (magazine) (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The set's standouts include a bluesy, raucous cover of The Beatles' 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' and a powerful, gospel-infused take on George Harrison's ballad, 'Something'..." Joe Cocker! album
$10.69 This is a transitional Al Stewart album. After stretching the boundaries of song length and language with Love Chronicles, he was in a something of a holding pattern on Orange, without any obviously profound inspiration or moments of daring. "Songs Out of Clay," however, does reveal the first signs of the mix of acoustic and electric guitar sounds that he would perfect on his next album, Past, Present and Future, two years later, while "The Fourth of May," a six-minute personal story-song, gets something of the beat and the sound that Stewart would refine in achieving his subsequent success -- he just needed ...

Joe Cocker! CD music
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer ...

| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Joe Cocker! CD music
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, ...

Joe Cocker! music CDs
$10.15 Courtney Lemmon… when she sings, angels pause. A native of Santa Monica, California, Courtney has been active musically since elementary school. Her early performances include fundraisers with such acclaimed artists as Natalie Cole and Robert Winter, as well as her solo Jazz debut at 15 with Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton. Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Eva Cassidy, Fiona Apple and Billy Holliday all inspired her to investigate a wide range of genres. This appreciation for a wide pallet of musical styles lead her to the Jazz and Contemporary Program at Manhattan’s prestigious New School University, of which she is a recent graduate with a high respect for the blues due to her studies with the incredible pianist Junior Mance. Now back in Santa Monica, she recently recorded her debut CD “Stay With Me” teaming her with Grammy winner Mike Acosta as a co-writer, Producer and Saxophonist. Mr. Acosta is known as the creative genius behind the original Brian Setzer Orchestra, for which her served as Musical Director, Arranger and featured soloist. For her first full-length recording he surrounded her with Grammy nominees and LA session players to add experience to her youthful sound. This combination of youth and experience propels her music on a journey through several of her favorite styles ...

Here's how it all happened. A substitute drummer and bass player at the same gig ...how lucky could one guitar player be? I knew the drummer but hadn't yet met the bass player ... he came highly recommended. In walked a mountain of a man with a huge smile, derby hat and some serious gear. I was totally hooked after the first song, crumpled the song list and threw it away. The bass dude spanked the hell out of the plank and sang ...man could he sing! It was all over before I could take in ...
