Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert video
$10.59 As the title suggests, Cubanismo's third album is a reincarnation of sorts, with several new band members and an even greater variety of musical stylings explored. One thing that hasn't changed is the almost tangible intensity and excitement that Jesus Alemany and company bring to every song, whether a traditional Cuban number originally performed a half century ago or a new composition. This album is slightly more subdued than the previous two, but is excellent nonetheless. While Malembe is recommended as the best starting point for neophytes, one really can't go wrong with any of this group's first three albums. ~ Steve McMullen

Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert film
$13.69 BLUES EVERYWHERE I GO was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Just in time to commemorate her 50th anniversary in show business, Odetta released 1999's BLUES EVERYWHERE I GO, her first full-length album in 14 years. Solidly backed by members of Conan O'Brien's house band, the classically trained folk/blues legend chose to reach back beyond the Chicago blues era for material to interpret. Befitting her reputation as an activist/historian, Odetta's choices include songs addressing the plight of the poor ("Unemployment Blues," "Homeless Blues") and the dark ...

Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert review
$12.89 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Most of Anthony Wilson's recordings to date tend to put the focus on his writing, so this workout by the guitarist in a trio is a welcome change of pace. Wilson has a melodic and boppish style with an attractive tone. He interacts with two fellow citizens of Los Angeles: organist Joe Bagg and drummer Mark Feber. Wilson contributes three originals and also plays songs by Bagg, Kenny Burrell, the Beatles, Frank Loesser, and Duke Ellington ("Prelude to a Kiss"). Overall this is a fine straight-ahead jazz date by an underrated but talented guitarist. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bill Evans Play The Arrangements Of Jimmy Giuffre CD (2005) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert DVD
$12.05 Dual sessions from jazz heavy weights Bill Evans and Lee Konitz captured in New York in 1959. Features five bonus tracks including, "You Are Too Beautiful" and "Ev'rything I've Got (Belongs To You)." Spanish import.
This Lone Hill Jazz compilation presents the contents of two separate releases Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre and You and Lee featuring Lee Konitz and Jimmy Giuffre (the latter playing baritone sax and contributing the arrangements) together, with pianist Bill Evans being the prominent sideman, though the ensemble includes tenor saxophonists Warne Marsh and Ted Brown (both of whom studied with Lennie Tristano alongside Konitz), and alto saxophonist Hal McKusick, though it is Konitz that is featured throughout the sessions from Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre. Konitz contributed the quirky blues "Cork 'N' Bib," which features an unusually bluesy solo by Evans, plus an atonal offering by Marsh and Giuffre's robust single chorus. The breezy setting of "The Song ...

Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert movie DVD
$13.85 In the '80s, there appeared to be an onslaught of fusion releases that managed to incorporate elements of funk into the mix, while also favoring an incredibly clean production. Although the style appeared to go largely out of vogue in the '90s, several veteran players continued to stick to their guns, including drummer extraordinaire Dennis Chambers. Chambers has been releasing solo albums since the late '90s, yet he's probably best known as a hired gun, having played alongside several renowned artists of the rock world -- Santana, Steely Dan, and ...
| | Felix Cabrera Cu-Bop Cu-Blues CD (2004)
Yellowjackets - New Morning: The Paris Concert video
$9.35 BLUES REVUEAug/Sept 2007 by Kay CorditzThe Felix Cabrera Blues Band – Murray Street Grill – New York City – May 4 Felix Cabrera can shout the blues and blow a mean harp. But the Cuban-born bandleader also has a knack for rolling with the punches. The day before this Friday night gig, Phil Butler, Cabrera’s bass player for the past 11 years, was injured in a car accident. Then Guitar ace Jimmy Vivino, a frequent and popular addition to the band, was called out of town with Conan O’Brien. But Cabrera was undeterred. He contacted bassist Ritt Henn, who played in his band twenty years ago and has filled in before. Fiery blues guitarist Jason Green, one of several local players who have rotated through Cabrera’s band, answered the call too. With longtime drummer Bill Schroeder and keyboardist Eddy Bishai, the subs rocked this small basement club and solidly showcased Cabrera’s Latin blues style. The self-taught Cabrera, who left Cuba as a child and came to New York by way of Miami and Union City, NJ, calls Paul Butterfield his first influence. He saw the original Butterfield Blues Band at a New York City club in 1966 and almost always starts his show with their songs. “Driftin’ and Driftin’” featured Cabrera’s emotional vocals, crying guitar ...
