In 1992, quirky and seemingly non-commercial bands were being signed to major labels by the boatload, thanks to the newfound success of alternative rock. One of the most blatantly bizarre acts to be taken under a corporate wing was Ween, a duo of Pennsylvania pranksters with a penchant for eclectic--and often wholly inappropriate--pop/rock tunes.
For the group's Elektra debut, PURE GUAVA, Dean and Gene Ween remained unapologetically weird from the get-go, as the drowsy, druggy "Little Birdy" ushers in the thoroughly skewed proceedings. While songs such as "Reggaejunkiejew," "Touch My Tooter," and "Poop Ship Destroyer" stick to sophomoric themes and a lo-fi sound, the prog-rock-like "The Stallion Pt. 3" and the (relatively) straightforward ballad "Sarah" hint at even greater things to come. PURE GUAVA's shining moments arrive in the typically oddball forms of the distorted ditty "Big Jilm," the relentless pop tune "Push th' Little Daisies" (Ween's first minor hit), and "Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)," a giddily over-the-top, mock-stadium-rock number, replete with garish multi-tracked vocals. While the ridiculousness of this album is undeniable, so is the ever-evolving talent of Dean and Gene, who here began an impressive streak of adventurous and absurd outings that would lead to their '97 peak, THE MOLLUSK.

Queen's 1973 debut is definitely their most underrated album of that decade. Although most tracks aren't as well known as the band's later material, QUEEN proves to be an impressively consistent listen from beginning to end. It's extraordinary how many of the group's future musical trademarks were already detectable in their debut--Brian May's orchestrated guitar harmonies, multi-tracked vocal "choirs," imaginative songwriting and dynamics that could switch from head-banging heavy metal to reflective balladry in the blink of an eye.
Although QUEEN was recorded off and on over a three-year period, the tracks still manage to be focused and unified. The rocker "Liar" contains a middle section that foreshadows Queen's future hits (1975's "Bohemian Rhapsody," 1976's "Somebody To Love," etc.) while ...

Although QUEEN II borders on heavy metal (it wasn't until their next release, SHEER HEART ATTACK, that they began experimenting with other musical forms), the songwriting and playing is still top-notch. Queen was criticized by some in the press upon the release of QUEEN II, since there was simply nothing to compare it to--it encompassed glam, progressive, and metal, with a healthy dose of studio wizardry.
QUEEN II contained the band's first official UK hit--the mystical "Seven Seas of Rhye"--and, as on their debut a year prior, the lesser-known material is just as delightful. Singer Freddie Mercury and guitarist Brian May contribute one lovely ballad each--"White Queen (As It Began)" and "Some Day One Day." It's easy to be over-whelmed by Gene and Dean Ween's music. Recorded in basements and home-studios, their albums sound like composite sketches of an immense, diverse record library (Prince, Zeppelin, America, Funkadelic, you name it), splashing together lyrical canvases that draw on both a post-modern slack brilliance of the everyday and their own perverse private world.
