It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.

This Tony Rice CD is a little different from his typical fare, as it focuses exclusively on old-time hymns and spirituals, all featuring his unique style of picking that can't be mistaken for anyone else but the incredible guitarist himself. Accompanied by David Johnson (who plays mandolin, banjo, viola, fiddle, harmonica, bass, and banjotar), drummer Tony Creasman, and either Tim Surrett or Ben Isaacs on bass, Rice brings out the best in all of these time-tested melodies in this strictly instrumental disc. "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is an upbeat romp with a nod toward traditional bluegrass, while the inspirational hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy" is very subdued, with Rice prominently featured in the foreground. An elegantly improvised introduction to "Amazing Grace" may keep many listeners guessing. Although this CD may not be of much interest to strictly secular fans of Tony Rice, they owe it to themselves to give it a hearing, though it may be hard to acquire since this 1994 release seems to have lapsed from print. ~ Ken Dryden

And at the same time I was learning to playhook-heavy Beatles tunes.”“By the end of my 9th grade year, I was performing my original songs (along with plenty of Beatles covers) to groups of 40 to 50 people in my friend’s backyard. This became a frequent event for the rest of my high school experience.”Heyborne recorded 3 albums during his high school years and continued to build a strong following.
