In 1973, Eric Burdon was asked to write the soundtrack for a film entitled MIRAGE. Entering the Record Plant studio in San Francisco with his group, The Eric Burdon Band, the singer-songwriter set to work recording. The soundtrack was already complete when United Artists decided to pull the plug on the movie project. The proposed double LP soundtrack similarly ended up gathering dust on the shelf, until this 2009 release. Although purportedly themed around the then still on-going Vietnam War, only the opening track "Dragon Lady" even obliquely refers to the conflict, while the other great societal divisions of the day are, if anything, even more veiled. Relieved of the burden of writing an actual album, Burdon used the soundtrack to explore a vast variety of styles, most notably on the title track, in which the singer incorporated lyrics written by friend Jimi Hendrix the night he died. The music pays fine tribute to him, while the psyched-out "Stole My Heart Away (First Sight)" also bears Hendrix's influence. The hard rocking "River of Blood", arguably the most creative track on the set, has hints of War, while also being inspired by Native American rhythms. But, as diverse as the music is, Burdon's fabulously enthusiastic performances pull it all together, and whether he's in spoken word mode or crying out his fury against the white man ("Geronimo"), the singer is never less than sensational.
Digitally remastered reissue of this rare release from the former Animals frontman. Recorded in Los Angeles in 1973, Mirage was one of the finest albums of the 1970's by Burdon. The soundtrack for a proposed United Artists film with the Vietnam War as its subject matter, the music recorded by Burdon, such as 'Dragon Lady', 'River Of Blood', 'Mind Arc' and 'Driftin'/Geronimo's Last Stand', was some of the finest of his career. Exploring the genres of Rock, Psychedelia and African beats, the sessions also saw Burdon record the song "Mirage", written by Jimi Hendrix on the night he died. Sadly, first the film and latterly a proposed double album release by Atlantic Records were shelved and the Mirage album and sessions were consigned to the archives. Esoteric. 2009.

CHICAGO II remains a classic album, encapsulating its time (1969) in all its tumult and glory. The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. Chicago, with their then-new fusion of jazz, rock, and pop, rose high on the charts, while taken seriously both in and beyond the rock-critic establishment. (Some jazz listeners respected and enjoyed Chicago as well.) Having recorded four albums (one of which was the soundtrack WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?) in slightly over a year, the band was on a shockingly strong roll here (which began to unravel after the release of HUMS, when Zal Yanovsky left). Then all of 22-years old, John Sebastian penned all the songs for HUMS. The album opens with "Lovin' You," a perfect confluence of pop and jugband music, and it closes with their biggest hit, "Summer In the City." In between are the classics "Rain On The Roof" and "Nashville Cats," along with a host of lesser-known, but no less ingratiating numbers from the short-lived but prolific Lovin' Spoonful.
