Second in a series of three Hi studio albums, O.V. Wright was finally allowed to record for Willie Mitchell's own label, since his former employer, Don Robey, had sold Backbeat to ABC in 1973. As was the case with Al Green, Mitchell had developed a longtime friendship with Wright, overseeing most of his Backbeat single sides and albums. Come the end of the '70s the famous Hi sound started to lose a little of its tightness, but this is fairly overcome by Wright's exceptional vocal qualities. The Bottom Line wasn't crafted with the same session men as it's predecessor. Mostly made up of ballads, the single "I Don't Do Windows" stands apart as the only up-tempo exception. Bobby Womack's "That's the Way I Feel About Cha" gets a nice Southern soul makeover. A "late night jazz bar everybody gone home contemplative" "I Don't Know Why" is similar to a lesser known Stevie Wonder track, coincidentally of the same name. The shimmering "A Little More Time" deserves special mention: starting out as a roll call of soul singers who had died way before their time, it's a tribute of prophetic proportions. Soon enough Wright would join their league. Many compilations of his Hi output were released throughout the second half of the '90s. Both Hi Masters and That's How Strong My Love Is collect almost everything of this album and its predecessor, Into Something (Can't Shake Loose). The Complete O.V. Wright on Hi Records, Vol. 1: In the Studio also includes the third and last of the Hi studio albums, We're Still Together. ~ Quint Kik

$9.55 The 1990s may not have been kind to Michael Jackson on a commercial level, due to fickle music tastes and assorted personal controversies, but NUMBER ONES reinforces Jackson's place in pop culture history. Zeb and Haniya have matured from the underground to the national scene in Pakistan, where their ascent continues today. Their songs bring a spectrum of style, instrumentation and influence. Some tracks ring with the cheeriness of pop while others capture the evocative richness of Pashto and Darri (Farsi) folk traditions. Their sound is not confined to one genre, and has been described as Alternative, Art Folk, Ethnic Blues and World Music. Their influences are many, including pioneering pop and folk from Pakistan, 60s and 70s folk guitar-based music from the US and UK, classical South Asian music, classic Jazz, delta Blues. The artists skim across decades, genres and borders to produce a truly innovative sound. Their songs seamlessly mix blues grooves and jazzy rhythms into complex melodies grounded in local traditions. Finally, we have a sound that touches the brilliant kaleidoscope of language, history and culture that is Pakistan.-----------------------------Read album reviews for Chup:City FM89 (Pakistan) - http://www.cityfm89.com/website/sensepostview.aspx?pid=403-After arriving on the scene 4 years ago with their hit single “Chup”, the soft sultry vocals of female duo Zeb and Haniya are finally out with a full length album, quite possibly one of the most anticipated releases of the year. One can safely say its been worth the wait. The album is a gorgeous collection of songs that will make you smile, make you brood, will soothe your senses and make you marvel at the exquisite quality of the music you are hearing. Boasting an all-star cast including Mekaal Hassan as producer, Gumby on drums, Shallum on guitar and guest appearances from Co-Ven, the album “Chup” is a sure hit. The re-worked version of the lead single “Chup” doesn’t have the playful urgency of the original, but replaces that with smooth groove you can sink your teeth into. The gorgeous acoustic guitar picking gives way to a tasty trumpet that really takes the song to a new level.-----------------------------Dawn Images, Pakistan - http://www.dawn.com/weekly/images/archive/080810/images5.htm-----------------------------The News, Instep, Pakistan - http://jang.com.pk/thenews/aug2008-weekly/nos-03-08-2008/instep/article3.htmPassion Play:Zeb & Haniya's 'Chup' breaks new ground for Pakistani music.
