Baroque Voix\voices Vol 30 - Vêpres Sous Charles VI À Vienne / Cao, Arsys, L'Arpeggiata
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album ...

| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Baroque Voix\voices Vol 30 - Vêpres Sous Charles VI À Vienne / Cao, Arsys, L'Arpeggiata
$10.39 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. ...

Baroque Voix\voices Vol 30 - Vêpres Sous Charles VI À Vienne / Cao, Arsys, L'Arpeggiata
$15.69 Thomas and Beulah is Amnon Wolman's most ambitious and surprising work to date. The Jewish-American gay composer put to music poems from African-American Rita Dove. Her collection by the same title has won a Pulitzer Prize. In it, she re-creates the lives of her grandparents. The racial, social, and sexual paradoxes at play, as fascinating they can be, never take center stage. The composer has cleverly worked his way around the situation by embracing them (does that registers as another paradox?). Soprano Cynthia Haymon alternates between sung melodies (modern lieder), speech-singing, and narration. Performed on a Yamaha Disklavier, pianist Ursula Oppens' score calls for conventional playing, prepared piano, live electronic treatments, and triggering Wolman's pre-recorded tape music segments and Dove's recitation of her poems. A network of elements takes place: acoustic/electronic, performed/recorded, sung/spoken, singer/author. The resulting music is larger than life, constantly shifting its point-of-view. The writing remains sober, even detached and clinical at times, but Haymon gives it breath. If some parts appear tentative ("Weathering ...
