Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Blue Ray HD-DVD In writer-director Kerry Conran's debut film, ace pilot Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law) reluctantly teams up with his former flame, journalist Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), to uncover the mystery behind a group of missing scientists and a series of shocking robot attacks. Aided by gadgetry whiz Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi) and enigmatic military commander Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), Joe and Polly must find out who is responsible for an increasingly elaborate scheme that may trigger the end of the world.
A highly stylized, mostly computer-generated spectacle, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW is a striking cinematic achievement. Steeped in the marvelous visuals of 1930s pop culture, Conran's movie is a loving tribute to that era, featuring clever nods to FLASH GORDON, BUCK ROGERS, and other adventure serials of the time. Beginning in a gloriously slate-gray, towering New York City, this movie follows its heroes from one intriguing locale to the next. Although the remarkable images of the film threaten to eclipse the characters at times, SKY CAPTAIN is very well cast, with the actors pitch-perfect for their respective roles, particularly the luminous Paltrow and the brainy Ribisi. And yet the stunning retro-futuristic design is always at the fore, making for a wonderfully unique movie. Theatrical Release: September 17, 2004. Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow Video Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow Movie Review GREAT MOVIE, BUT NOT FOR THE AVERAGE ACTION-MOVIE FAN some might say there's overacting and exaggeration, in my opinion those are evidently intentional and required: this is a movie that tries to re-create the 40's (?) atmosphere (visually and technologically).
imagine something that mixes Indiana Jones, Hellboy (not in equal parts)a hint of James Bond, and H.G. Wells and you'll get the idea ;)
in my opinion just by the visuals it's worth to see. Submitted by t4d30 (Barren Gardens, MEXICO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Go For The Eye Candy When you pick up a DVD like this, it isn't for great art. It's for action, maybe some plot, and a lot of eye candy. Sky Cap'n delivers all of these, so I was pretty happy. I was also happy about the "no great art" part, because I like Movies not Films. Submitted by Steve (Oceanside, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
disappointing The premise had promise, but the actors / actresses were all wrong (except for Dix). The computer-generated world seemed to lack detail (granted, I'm spoiled by Matrix), althought the robots were kinda cool. It was ok to watch once, but I wish I had borrowed it from the library, or better yet, waited for it to be on cable. Save your money for something else. Corny Sci-Fi Flick Bad from the first scene, this film's special effects do not live up to the hype. Worse still, the plot seriously lacks any surprise or originality. Even as a parody of this genre, this film fails. A waste of time and money to buy on DVD. Submitted by Jumba (Chicago) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
sky captain is a great adventure to the past I thought that skycaptain kept in spirit with the whole 50's era sci-fi thriller. the filming was a great change from the hi budget films and efects every movie sets store by these days. paltrow and law were great together and angelina couldn't have been better as the captain of the flying airstrip. $9.69 Based on a story by STAR WARS creator George Lucas, WILLOW is director Ron Howard's fantasy world of medieval adventure. WILLOW stars Val Kilmer as Madmartigan, a swashbuckling warrior, and Warwick Davis as the title character. In a mythical kingdom, the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) plots to kill all infants so that the newborn princess, Elora, will never take over the throne. But a midwife sets the baby adrift in a river, and she is rescued by Willow, a farmer in Nelwyn, a peaceful village of trolls, fairies, and little folk. Willow and Madmartigan begin a quest to deliver the baby from evil while being chased by Queen Bavmorda's daughter, Sorsha (Joanne Whalley), sent to bring the baby back to Nockmaar. Director Howard benefited from his affiliation with George Lucas on the film--Lucas's company, Industrial Light and Magic, contributed the Oscar-nominated special effects. Lucas, the executive producer of WILLOW, went on to create a series ...

$24.95 Based on the Hasbro toy line that initially captivated kids in the 1980s, director Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS finds two warring bands of shape-shifting alien robots renewing their intergalactic conflict on Earth. While the Decepticons, followers of the malevolent Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), strive to take over the planet, the Autobots, led by the valiant Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), are intent on protecting humanity. When young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is really the Autobot Bumblebee (voiced by Mark Ryan), it sets the stage for a massive giant-robot showdown.
A shining example of the Hollywood summer blockbuster at its best, TRANSFORMERS combines stunning CGI effects and thrilling action sequences with drama, humor, and a touch of romance. Featuring a large cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, John Turturro, Anthony Anderson, and Rachael Taylor, the film is anchored by LaBeouf, who always displays an engaging Everyman charm, ...

Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow movie DVD
$32.15 Based on the long-running STREET FIGHTER video-game franchise, THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI stars Kristin Kreuk (SMALLVILLE) as the title character, a concert pianist who becomes a fiery karate-kicking avenger. Determined to rescue her father (Edmund Chen) from the clutches of Bangkok-based, bad-guy businessman Bison (Neal McDonough), Chun-Li enlists the help of the sage Gen (Robin Shou) and crosses paths with Interpol agents Nash (Chris Klein) and Maya (Moon Bloodgood). Aiding the sinister Bison are the formidable Balrog (Michael Clarke Duncan) and the deadly Vega (Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas), who are determined to eliminate Chun-Li and her allies, leading to numerous explosive martial-arts showdowns.
Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (DOOM, ROMEO MUST DIE), STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI easily outshines the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme adaptation of the video-game series (simply titled STREET FIGHTER) with better casting and, of course, more advanced effects. While Kreuk works well as the earnest Chun-Li, McDonough and Duncan seem to be having the most fun hamming it up as the key villains. Far from Oscar caliber, of course, STREET FIGHTER is enjoyable popcorn fare that has the distinction of having a strong female lead, putting it in line with the LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER movies.
