| | Howie Day Sound The Alarm CD Howie Day Discography of CDs
Howie Day began his career as an experimental songwriter, using loop pedals and digital effects to turn his guitar into a lush, layered instrument. Even when the material wasn't top-notch, his solo shows frequently were, and Day sharpened his act by canvassing the college circuit for years. Following his signing to Epic Records, he streamlined his approach, taking the spotlight away from his acoustic guitar and focusing instead on smooth, massively orchestrated pop/rock--and 2003's STOP ALL THE WORLD NOW went gold as a result. SOUND THE ALARM follows in those steps, featuring 11 songs that brim with studio polish and mega-sized hooks. Tracks were composed with a handful of collaborators in L.A., New York, London, Minneapolis, and Bloomington, and the results are prime radio fodder, even if two of the best numbers here--the piano ballad "Everybody Loves to Love a Lie" and the Verve-influenced "Counting on Me"--are the album's most unconventional songs.

Sound The Alarm album
$6.79 Another in a series of superb wandering groove albums from the premier sweet soul singer. He took the standard three-minute pop soul song and expanded the format. It is Gaye that is responsible for today's smooching urban R&B; he was for much of his career many years ahead of the game. This has been described as his "oral sex" album, not that the others were not; this has the erotic edge. Built around the title track, the album is a theme album and as such should be played as a whole. There are no "Too Busy Thinking Bout My Baby's" on this; it is a much more challenging but satisfying work.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Marvin Gaye Let's Get It On CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Sound The Alarm CD music
$6.75 This 2-CD deluxe edition of LET'S GET IT ON features various session recordings leading up to or associated with the landmark 1973 release, which is also included in its original form.
Principally recorded between 1970 and 1973. LET'S GET IT ON originally released on Tamla (329). Includes liner notes by Ed Townsend, David Ritz, Ben Edmonds and Harry Weinger.
Relishing the artistic freedom afforded by the success of WHAT'S GOING ON, Marvin Gaye recorded this sultry paean to sex. Where its predecessor relied on complex arrangements, the straightforward sound of LET'S GET IT ON focused attention on its tight rhythms, strong melodies, and Gaye's expressive, nuanced singing. For sheer sensual come-on, it's hard to beat the title track, one of the finest celebrations of the joys of human chemistry ever recorded. But the self-explanatory "Come Get to This" and "You Sure Love to Ball" aren't far behind in terms of passionate execution and visceral impact.
Though LET'S GET IT ON has its reflective moments, notably the beautiful ballad "Distant Lover," ...
| | Al Stewart Greatest Hits CD (2004)
Sound The Alarm music CDs
$7.89 Over the years, there have been plenty of Al Stewart collections, most featuring the same five or six songs, giving the impression that he's an easy artist to compile. That, however, isn't quite the case. Most of these collections are haphazardly assembled, focusing either on his early elaborate historical story songs or his lush productions of the late '70s and early '80s, choosing songs that were not necessarily hits and not necessarily good showcases for his idiosyncratic gifts. Despite its nondescript (and misleading) title and its cover art, which bewilderingly mimics the cover of Year of the Cat, Rhino's 2004 collection Greatest Hits is the first to truly to capture Stewart at his best, from his baroque British folk-rock in the late '60s to his soft rock hits a decade later. While all his American hits are here, this is more of a "best of" than a hits compilation, since it doesn't follow the charts and zeroes in on songs that capture his precious, sighing, sophisticated, lightly psychedelic and elaborately produced progressive ...

$19.89 Even before his passing in 2003, there was already an enormous amount of Johnny Cash compilations in circulation, and the amount of new releases only intensified afterward. Case in point, the 2005 double-disc set Johnny Cash Collection. The 25-track audio portion is quite a dandy, as quite a few early Cash classics are represented, including ...
