| | Colbie Caillat Breakthrough CD Colbie Caillat Discography of CDs
Colbie Caillat's breakthrough arrived before BREAKTHROUGH, when her debut COCO turned into a breezy surprise hit. BREAKTHROUGH isn't meant to catapult Caillat into a mainstream that already knows her, but to consolidate her success, so it's not entirely a surprise that the album bears evidence of her showbiz kid roots, a record that relies just a bit more on the studio than the song. It's a creation that's slicker and sleeker than the debut, but fortunately, it's not quite at the expense of Caillat's simple charms. The high-buff sheen on BREAKTHROUGH can mean that the songs glide down a little too smoothly, sliding down like a velvety pina colada, which is perhaps a bit too sophisticated after the everyday charms of COCO, and perhaps a little bit too polished for Colbie in general. Underneath all that gloss, Caillat remains a simple girl singing songs of love as light and crisp as a sugar cookie.

Purchase Breakthrough CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Sara Bareilles Little Voice CD (2007)
Breakthrough album
$10.09 Buoyed by the springy, Motown-ish single "Love Song," Sara Bareilles's major-label debut (and second full-length album) has brought the songwriter/pianist some well-deserved attention and a place on the Billboard charts. With a clear, expressive (and hardly little) voice that glides effortlessly from alto to soprano, Bareilles conveys vulnerability and wisdom in lyrics that speak honestly about relationships from a woman's point of view. Her piano-playing and songwriting veer from Billy Joel bounce to Fiona Apple angst, but it's all held together by a commanding sense of melody, and a lovely, pristine production.

| | Colbie Caillat Coco: Summer Sessions CD (2007)
Breakthrough CD music
$10.79 On her 2007 debut, COCO, Los Angeles, California-based singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat offers up a charming set of R&B-tinged acoustic pop. Aided by her father, veteran producer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac), as well as multi-instrumentalist/producer Mikal Blue and vocalist/guitarist Jason Reeves, Caillat comes across as a female counterpart to fellow laid-back West Coast performer Jack Johnson, particularly on the light, easy-going number "Bubbly."

| | Kings Of Leon Only By The Night CD (2008)
Breakthrough music CDs
$8.99 With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern vacation, as post-punk angularity, distorto-funk bass lines, and clattering percussion are processed through what sounds like the world's biggest fuzzbox. While there are old-glory moments of garagey abandon, most of these tracks sound like someone sat and carefully considered the best way to frame them. And that's ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Breakthrough songs
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Breakthrough album
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there's an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. ...

Breakthrough album
$15.19 Japanese horror-comical freak metal punk. In Japan, there was a girls punk band called "10 Yen Anakinoko", which the singer Seiko started when she was 15 years old. This band ended after playing their last show in New York in 1995, and they became legend. 5 years later, 10 Yen Anakinoko played a one time reunion show in New York. A guitarist Jun was called in as a support guitar player, and this led to the beginning of the band GELATINE. Only a few hours after this reunion show, Seiko and Jun decided to start a new band. They had two aims to enforce. One was to let the great songs of 10 Yen Anakinoko come alive once again and even take them to a new level. Second aim was just simply to create new and intense music. Spring of 2001, GELATINE started playing shows, and at their first show, they were already able to show their new very high-quality original songs. The band continued to be active around New York area, and kept people dismayed especially with Seiko's intense ...
