Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Blue Ray HD-DVD This director-approved special edition Criterion Collection contains four performance films by legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker from the unforgettable 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Titles included are MONTEREY POP, JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY, SHAKE! OTIS AT MONTEREY, and MONTEREY POP: THE OUTTAKE PERFORMANCES.
MONTEREY POP: This documentary features live performances, behind-the-scenes and audience footage, and other selections from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which was considered to be the forerunner to Woodstock. The concert was organized by Alan Pariser, an L.A. rock scenester; John Phillips, singer for the Mamas and the Papas; and Lou Adler, a record producer, along with a board of musicians such as Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Donovan, Brian Wilson, and Smokey Robinson. Performers include Simon and Garfunkel, Ravi Shankar, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, and Jefferson Airplane, among many others.
JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY: A filmmaking legend meets a rock legend in this fantastic historical concert video. Documentarian D.A. Pennebaker captures master guitarist Jimi Hendrix on film at what has become one of his most renowned performances. Most fans will recognize the image that has produced a thousand posters--the red-and-orange-clad Jimi passionately setting his guitar on fire and watching it burn, with an exultant look on his face. More than just a concert film, JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY is an iconic record of 1960s rock.
SHAKE! OTIS AT MONTEREY: Pennebaker captures Otis Redding in his prime at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, performing such hits as "Try a Little Tenderness," "Shake," "Respect," "Satisfaction," and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."
MONTEREY POP: THE OUTTAKE PERFORMANCES: This rock document features more than two hours of performances not included in the original MONTEREY POP film. Artists include Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Who, the Mama and the Papas, and many more. The Monterey International Pop Festival took place over three days, June 16 to June 18, 1967, and drew 50,000 people. Tickets for Monterey ranged in price from $3.50 to $6.
Performers who appeared at the festival (but not necessarily in the film MONTEREY POP): Big Brother and the Holding Company, Otis Redding, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Association, The Electric Flag, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, The Blues Project, Laura Nyro, Hugh Masekela, Buffalo Springfield, Country Joe and the Fish, Booker T. and the MG's, The Mamas and the Papas, Quicksilver Messenger Serivce, The Mar-Keys, Lou Rawls, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Ravi Shankar.
MONTEREY POP was screened at the 1968 Venice Film Festival.

Complete Monterey Pop Festival Video Complete Monterey Pop Festival Movie Review Complete Monterey Pop Festival DVD On a beautiful June weekend in 1967 at the height of the so-called "summer of love," the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward - capturing a decade's spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey would launch the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, but they were just a few among a wildly diverse cast including Simon and Garfunkel, The Mamas and the Papas, The Who, The Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. With his characteristic verite style, D.A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing those moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend destroying his guitar; Jimi Hendrix burning his. The Criterion Collection is proud to present the most comprehensive document of The Monterey International Pop Festival ever produced, featuring all three films of the festival - "Monterey Pop" (1967, 80min.), "Jimi Plays Monterey" (1986, 50min.) and "Shake! Otis At Monterey" (1987, 18min.) - along with nearly every complete performance filmed by Pennebaker and his crew, the "Outtakes" (1997, 120min.).

| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Complete Monterey Pop Festival film
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern ...

Complete Monterey Pop Festival review
$23.39 With its rivers of blood, this adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical isn't for the faint of heart--or stomach. But thanks to the black humor, impeccable production design, and gorgeous music, Tim Burton fans will want to sing after seeing SWEENEY TODD. For his sixth collaboration with the director, Johnny Depp stars as Benjamin Barker aka Sweeney Todd, a barber falsely imprisoned by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). After leaving prison, he comes back to Victorian London to find his wife poisoned and his daughter held captive. As he plots his revenge, Sweeney joins forces with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), and while he preys on clients asking for a shave, his new partner turns the bodies into baked goods. But the judge still lives, and the razor-wielding madman wants his vengeance.
Though it's a musical, SWEENEY TODD has more in common with Italian horror films ...
