Black & White; Standard Screen; English Subtitles MAYERLING tells the story of one of the greatest romances the world has ever seen. When the reluctant heir to the crown of the Austria-Hungary empire (Charles Boyer), unfulfilled by his political fate, falls in love with a young, innocent woman (Danielle Darrieux) in late 19th-century Vienna, their stolen romance sets off a series of fantastic and tragic events. Exquisitely filmed and acted, MAYERLING exudes a fascinating historic air while remaining a love story that is gripping to the end. Based on real events, MAYERLING chronicles the remarkable love affair between the married heir to the Austrian throne, the Archduke Rudolph (Charles Boyer), and his young mistress, Marie Vetsera (Danielle Darrieux). When Rudolph, disenchanted with the crown, is arrested with a group of demonstrating students, his father, the Emperor Franz Josef (Jean Dax), prompts him to renounce his radicalism and forces him into a loveless arranged marriage. With court spies tailing him everywhere, Rudolph is eventually able to free himself for a brief moment at a fair, where he meets and falls in love with the innocent and compassionate Marie who, at first, has no idea of his royal status. The emperor tries to break up the young couple's relationship, but Rudolph is so in love with Marie that he will not be swayed. It soon becomes clear that Rudolph and Marie's relationship is bound for history--and tragedy--when the couple meet their fate at the family hunting lodge, Mayerling. Poignant, poetic, and gripping from beginning to end, MAYERLING is regarded as one of director Anatole Litvak's masterpieces.
Theatrical release: September 13, 1937 (New York City).
MAYERLING was the film that brought director Anatole Litvak to Hollywood--it was such a success that it earned him a huge contract and also made Charles Boyer a star.
The story behind MAYERLING is rooted in history: the discovery of the bodies of Rudolph and Marie at the hunting lodge Mayerling originally set off a series of rumors of what happened, many made up by the royal family to avoid scandal or radical overthrow. It has come to be believed that the story in MAYERLING is pretty close to the truth, but official records of the deaths were long hidden, then destroyed.
Mayerling is now the site of a Carmelite convent where nuns pray in a chapel on the spot where the lovers met their sad end.
The inscription on the real Marie Vetsera's tomb reads: "He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down."
MAYERLING was voted the Best Foreign Film of 1937 by the National Board of Review.
A French film, MAYERLING TO SARAJEVO, was made in 1940. A full remake of MAYERLING was filmed in 1968 with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve.

The gorgeous duo of Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux first appeared on-screen together almost twenty years before The Earrings of Madame de . . . , in this sumptuous tragic romance from Anatole Litvak (The Snake Pit, Anastasia). MAYERLING is the profoundly emotional true story of the doomed adulterous affair between Archduke Rudolph, heir to the Austrian throne, and the young and innocent baron’s daughter Marie Vetsera.

$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder
2009 two CD set from the '60s trio, who have become one of the most revered Pop outfits of their time. Though they were not brothers and came from California, The Walker Brothers became international stars with a slew of great singles that were as unique as they were catchy. The British and European audiences were (and remain) their most devoted fanbase, although other countries have come around to The Walker Brothers special kind of magic in recent decades. 36 tracks including 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and many others. Universal.

Mayerling review
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and female impersonator Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon; Harry Crafton's "Bring That Cadillac Back" (a Cadillac might not be the best gift if your girlfriend likes to ramble) from 1947; Tampa Red's amazing, ringing slide guitar tone on "Christmas and New Year's Blues" from 1936; and the bizarre, disturbing field recording of "Junior's a Jap Girl's Christmas for His Santa Claus," sung by Willie Blackwell for Alan Lomax in Arkansas in 1942. Other high points include the charming "Christmas Boogie," recorded in 1950 by piano prodigy (he was only ten years old when this recording was made) Frankie "Sugar Chile" Robinson and the intense, bottled-up street-corner sermon "The Wrong Way to Celebrate Xmas," recorded by Rev. Edward Clayborn in 1928. The second disc yields even more holiday gems, including the bottleneck guitar attack of Black Ace (Babe Karo Lemon Turner) on 1937's "Christmas Time Blues (Beggin' Santa Claus)"; Leroy Carr's stark and brilliant "Christmas in Jail" from 1929; a breezy, bouncing "When Jesus Was Born" by gospel harmony quartet the Sons of Heaven (who were really the Selah Jubilee Singers doing a little moonlighting -- which they did often

$22.45 This adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel was made on a big budget in the author's native country, Poland. Set during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, QUO VADIS tells the story of a young soldier, Marcus Vinicius, who falls under the sway of Christianity when he falls in love with Lygia, a believer in the growing religion.
Acclaimed filmmaker Jerzy Kawalerowicz directs his last film--one of the most lavish and expensive films ever made in Poland. This familiar tale of Christianity set against the backdrop of Emperor Nero and the burning of Rome begins when soldier Marcus Vinicius returns to the Eternal City for rest and relaxation. Polish action star Boguslaw Linda costars as Vinicius's uncle Petronius, an official in good standing with the corrupt Emperor. Vinicius's loyalties are tested when he becomes interested in the teachings of Jesus through his sweetheart Lygia.

$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced to accept the painful realization that she may no longer be the most important figure in her grandson's life. Furthermore, the strain the war is placing on these young men, combined with their restrictive conditions, is even harder for her to bear. When her grandson must return to work, Alexandra floats around the camp, having brief but profound interactions with many different soldiers. While these exchanges vary from the humorous to the dramatic, there is a striking purity and simplicity to Sokurov's overall vision--not to mention Vishnevskaya's unforgettable, heartbreaking performance--that makes ALEXANDRA feel universal and profound.
