Italy has not been as important a player in metal as the Scandinavian countries (at least as of late 2007), but that said, Italy has made some noteworthy metal contributions in the '90s and 21st century -- and those contributions have ranged from goth metal (most notably, Milan's Lacuna Coil) to progressive metal (Luca Turilli and Rhapsody, for example). Pathosray have been part of Italy's prog metal scene since 2000, although this self-titled 2007 release is the band's first full-length album. There's a very good reason that the sticker on this lovely cabaret-styled live concert date is billed as the singer's "first new release in eight years" -- she died of cancer in December, 1995, just weeks after the performance documented here. The release of this disc and the rest of her catalog in 2005 isn't quite like the Eva Cassidy story. Symphonic black metal anthems flow effortlessly on the debut from Dark Lay Still. Hailing from Southern California, Dark Lay Still has been a force in the metal underground for many years now. Back in 2004, they released their first demo, “Joy in the Throes of Agony”, and followed that up in 2006 with “Prelude”. Both demos were met with critical acclaim, but the band went on a hiatus shortly after the release of Prelude to pursue other side projects. However, after a short break, the band came back full force and decided to rework and properly record 5 songs from the original demos as well as record a few brand new songs.
