Mercy album
$9.29 UNCLASSIFIED was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. "Squeeze" was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Listening to the musical mastery displayed on UNCLASSIFIED, it's hard to believe this is only Robert Randolph's first studio album, arriving on the heels of his in-concert debut record LIVE AT THE WETLANDS. Randolph comes out of the Sacred Steel tradition that mates gospel music with virtuosic pedal steel guitar playing. With the Family Band, he takes that sound a step further by incorporating the jam-band-friendly rock format that's found huge success with live audiences.
By turns funky and bluesy, he weaves his fiery-but-lyrical ...
| | Janiva Magness Do I Move You? CD (2006) Digipak
Mercy CD music
$11.89 As a three-time nominee for the WC Handy award for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year, Do I Move You shows that the accolade was no fluke. Janiva Magness follows up the terrific Bury Him at the Crossroads with a set that is even more varied and affecting. Co-produced once again with Colin Linden, Magness shifts from the tough Chicago shuffle of Willie Dixon's "Workin' on Me Baby" to the sax-peppered New Orleans rhythms of "I Can't Stop Crying" and the sensual, torchy Nina Simone title track. The singer's husky voice and sexy approach finds a perfect balance on arrangements that frame her vocals and provide enough support to keep Magness in the spotlight yet never overwhelm her. Credit also needs to go to Jeff Turmes, who as multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, sax) and songwriter (he pens three terrific tunes) is nearly as integral to the album's success as Linden and Magness. Kicking off with a shot of Marcia Ball-ish brashness in a cover of "I'm Just ...

| | Darrell Nulisch Goin' Back To Dallas CD (2007)
Mercy songs
$13.79 Best known as a soul vocalist who gravitates toward the blues, Darrell Nulisch "returns to his roots," as the cliché goes and press materials claim, on this stripped-down release. It was recorded live in the studio with his touring quartet of veterans, which provides a live, gritty feel somewhat, but not entirely disconnected from the singer/harpist's previous work in a smoother, soul-based vein. Despite the title, which pertains to Nulisch's home state (he was born in Dallas), the sessions were recorded in Severne, MD. Still, the style is closer to his early work as vocalist for Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets. That's particularly true of Jon Moeller's reserved, clean, yet powerful guitar lines that seem to have been inspired by Funderburgh's similar approach. This is an ensemble recording with ...
| | Sugar Ray My Life, My Friends, My Music CD (2007)
Mercy album
$13.15 Sugar Ray Norcia is well respected on the blues circuit for his contributions to electric Chicago blues, but he has had a fondness for jump blues for some time -- and on My Life, My Friends, My Music, the singer/harmonica player pleasantly surprises us by making jump blues and early ...

| | Billy Joel An Innocent Man CD (1983) Remastered; Enhanced CD
Mercy songs
$7.59 This is where Joel reaches back to his roots, a process essential to a maturing artist who realizes he has to look at where he's from before he can move further ahead. Things get off to a jumping start with the organ-driven R&B of "Easy Money," somewhat reminiscent of "Gimme Some Lovin'." Joel touches on the styles of the '50s and early '60s on the street-corner doowop of "The Longest Time" and the Four Seasons homage "Uptown Girl" (written for his then-wife, fashion model Christie Brinkley).
Things get introspective on the moving, self-analytical title tune and the endearing pop ballad "Leave A Tender Moment Alone," which is graced by the harmonica of Toots Thielemans. While Joel was busy exploring the music of his boyhood on AN INNOCENT MAN, every tune still bears his distinctive stamp, and the album is one of his strongest.
Recorded at Chelsea Sound & A&R Recording, New York, New York.
