With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on "Cleaning My Gun." But that's as close as he comes to really rocking out. More typical is "Hard Shoulder," a ballad that employs a twangy guitar sound and comes across as a number that Glen Campbell could have had a hit with back in his late-'60s "Wichita Lineman" heyday. The tunes support Knopfler's story-songs and musical character studies, as he describes or embodies truck drivers ("Border Reiver"), itinerant workers ("Get Lucky"), guitar makers ("Monteleone"), and sailors ("So Far from the Clyde"), among others, painting a portrait of pastoral and blue-collar life in the British Isles some time in the past.

Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it in 2009 with its new title feels almost right, since rock music is deliberately trying to return to the 1970s. These cats are all strict super-choppers and studio professionals. This is one of the strongest documents to feature Canned Heat in concert. However, contrary to the title, these performances are not from the Topanga Corral -- where the Heat were the house band off and on during the mid-1960s. Instead, it was later revealed the origins were actually from a Los Angeles club called the Kaleidoscope circa 1968. They most likely hail from the same batch of tapes that yielded the 4-plus-minute epic "Refried Boogie," which spread over Sides Three and Four on the Living the Blues (1968) two-LP package. The personnel includes Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals), and Aldolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums). Indeed, these recordings were made prior to the rapid drug-related decline and eventual replacement of Vestine -- who is actually in top flight throughout -- with Harvey Mandel in mid-1969. Another factor in the chronology is the soulful interpretation of standard blues numbers, which would be incrementally abandoned for longer and more rambling psychedelic jams by the time of Live in Europe (1970). However, the difference between the early 1970s incarnation and this 'classic' lineup seems to lie primarily in their respective approaches. This seminal aggregate explores more traditional outlets such as the languid approach to B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen," sporting some incendiary fretwork from the coupling of Wilson's smooth slide and Vestine's sinuous and punctuating leads. The former further exemplifies his bottleneck prowess on a rollicking reading of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" that swings solid from tip to tail. ...
