As a founding and former member of the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama, Clarence Fountain has enjoyed a 70-year career as a gospel singer, and amazingly, he still sings with skill and verve. On Stepping Up & Stepping Out, where Fountain shares billing with another former member of the Blind Boys, Sam Butler (no stranger to the secular side of things, having worked with Keith Richards, among others), Fountain has delivered what might be his most accessible and mainstream album yet. It's no secret that classic soul always derived its spirit and energy straight from gospel, with the two streams separated only by the nature of their themes, and there have been many singers (Sam Cooke and Al Green come immediately to mind) who've sung successfully in both genres without really changing the approach (only the lyrics), but generally it's all one or the other, either gospel or soul. What Fountain and Butler do on this very impressive release is actually combine the two, and it makes for an album of startling emotional balance. Every track has a powerful resonance, whether it leans to the gospel side or secular side of the great divide. There's so much to like here, but the beautiful "Down to the River," the Curtis Mayfield-like "It's a Different World" (which features a guest spot from Donald Fagen on melodica), and the bluesy, funky "Don't Let the Devil Ride" are clear highlights. It's unusual to hear a project where gospel and soul blend as artfully together as this, which makes Stepping Up & Stepping Out a rare and special treasure. ~ Steve Leggett Stepping Up & Stepping Out Music | List Price | $15.98 (You save $3.39) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, R&B CDs, Gospel | | Label | Tyscot | | All Time Sales Rank | 121068 | | CD Universe Part number | 7974969 | | Catalog number | 984182 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Aug 25, 2009 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Clarence Fountain; Jim Tullio | | Engineer | Chris Cameron; Dominic Bazille; Jim Tullio; Paul Antonelli; Lincoln Schleifer |

Stepping Up & Stepping Out
$18.99 "Sara Thomsen has created a recording that is subtly captivating and seductive in its fragility. “Everything Changes” is a personal record that magnetically pulls you in.Some artists write big, bold anthems that can overwhelm a listener. This record quietly beckons.Enter this world to find a woman daring to go into those vulnerable, dark places that we all like to keep hidden. Thomsen does it with courage, eloquence and dignity, while translating the contents of her soul into musical form..."...Thomsen’s heart has weathered upheaval and come out bigger and fuller. In “Everything Changes” she has produced a self-portrait that is radiant with elegance, grace and honesty. It weaves its way into your soul."--John Ziegler, Duluth News TribuneSpanish for everything changes, “Todo Cambia” is the title track and only cover song on a CD of otherwise Thomsen originals. During travels in Mexico, Central and South America, Thomsen became familiar with Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa’s popular version of this song written by Chilean Julio Numhauser. “To me this song is hope distilled,” says Thomsen. “It has carried me through the upheaval of difficult personal change and, on a social and political level, it gives me comfort and courage in the face of dismal and disheartening world affairs. Things will move. Everything changes.”Other highlights include “A Woman’s Place,” commissioned for Women’s Month at the College of St. Benedict (St. Joseph, Minnesota), which tackles an expansive subject with shimmering lyrics and latin rhythms that ...
