(2 Customer Reviews)
Despite building a large fan base and enjoying chart success, Massachusetts metallists Shadows Fall found themselves label-less prior to sessions began for their sixth studio album, 2009's RETRIBUTION. But everything worked out in the end, with the group collaborating with Warner Bros. Records on a new label venture, Everblack Industries. Any label snafus have not affected the way the lads go about their business, as RETRIBUTION follows the same game plan as latter-day Shadows Fall releases--raging metal tempered with some melody. And it takes very little time to show that guitarist Jonathan Donais is a frontrunner in the "modern-day six-string gymnastics" department, as he gets downright Yngwie on us with his solo in "My Demise." Elsewhere, you'll find ditties that at various times, cross over into thrash metal, death metal, and hardcore metal territory, especially "War," "King of Nothing" (not to be confused with the similarly-titled Metallica tune), and "Embrace Annihilation."

Personnel: Matthew Bachand, Jonathan Donais (vocals, guitar); Brian Fair (vocals); Jason Bittner (drums).

Alternative Press (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[F]eaturing plenty of headbanging riffs and screaming solos, all leading into big, sing-along choruses. It's a solid modern metal record..." Billboard (pp.28-29) - "[T]racks like 'The Taste of Fear' and 'Still I Rise' reflect a newfound economy of purpose..." $15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- ...

| | Paul Kossoff Back Street Crawler CDs (1973) Bonus CD; Deluxe Edition
Retribution
$18.09 Back Street Crawler, despite being Paul Kossoff's first post-Free album, contains contributions from all members of that band. "Molten Gold," the most accessible song on the album, features the talent of Free vocalist Paul Rodgers, and is an overlooked shoulda-been hit. Otherwise, the album is highlighted by Kossoff's blues- and rock-based guitar. "Time Away" is a haunting, atmospheric instrumental duet with avant folk-jazz guitarist/singer ...

$10.85 Listening to new albums while eating breakfast can sometimes be risky, as I discovered with "Fulmination," the new, dozen-song release by San Diego roots-rock pioneers The Farmers (formerly the Beat Farmers).Barely 40 seconds into the Mariachi-tinged "Mexicali Nights," a very deep-voiced man began a recitation that nearly caused me to choke on my bowl of Organic Hemp Plus Granola. The same voice is readily audible on "East County Woman," "The Invaders" and the rip-roaring garage-rock classic-to-be "Aw Man, C'mon!"Could this be the ghost of Country Dick Montana, the Beat Farmers' legendary leader and founder, who died in 1995 while performing on stage in Whistler, Canada? Or, perhaps, some archival recording that had been deftly spliced into this new Farmers' song by top San Diego album producer Sven-Erik Seaholm?A call to Farmers' bassist Chris Sullivan set me straight, although only after part of my ...
