The 3rd Gift: Story, Song And Spirit
$8.99 Donald Lawrence opens I SPEAK LIFE, his first record without the Tri-City Singers, with "Healed," a song where he delivers, in the most welcoming and relaxed tone, a universal sermon of finding recovery in a return to salvation. In the middle of the song, Lawrence unguardedly remarks "I like this part." It's that sense of openness that permeates the album, embodying the joy that makes Lawrence's gospel so markedly appealing.

| | Lee Ritenour Overtime CD (2005)
The 3rd Gift: Story, Song And Spirit
$7.09 Overtime is really two CDs in one. On the instrumentals, particularly "Bass City" and "Blue in Green," guitarist Lee Ritenour sounds a lot like Wes Montgomery and he leads his group (which features either Ernie Watts or Eric Marienthal on tenor) through some relatively straight-ahead numbers filled with soulful and creative playing. However the five vocals numbers are much more in the R&B/smooth vein and are largely throwaways despite the occasional presence of Ivan Lins. Clearly Ritenour was going for variety on this project but will probably only satisfy his greatest ...
| | Chris Walker I Know It's Love CD (2005)
The 3rd Gift: Story, Song And Spirit
$13.15 Think of Ornette Coleman, and one thinks of complex, cerebral, totally uncompromising free jazz. The saxman is a musical genius and a major innovator, but quite frankly, his work is way too abstract for most listeners -- and many people (including many jazz musicians) just plain don't understand what he does. But Chris Walker gets it; he spent two and a half years playing bass for Coleman. Walker has played with some other major jazz artists as well (including Gil Evans and Jimmy Heath), but as a vocalist/solo artist, he is known for more commercial recordings -- and commercial is definitely a word that describes I Know It's Love, which doesn't sound anything at all like a Coleman date. This 2005 release -- Walker's ...
| | Down To The Bone Spread Love Like Wildfire CD (2005)
The 3rd Gift: Story, Song And Spirit
$13.45 With Spread Love Like Wildfire, Down to the Bone gets back to the original musical vision its leader, Stuart Wade, had for the band. This 2005 release is much funkier and more energetic than Cellar Funk, the 2004 hit offered by the jazz/groove collective. The music -- jazz-funk fusion combined with modern retro/club/dance influences all grooved up -- is documented on 11 great tracks that feature the group's core members enhanced by a dynamic horn section, the jazz flute of Jeremy Steig, the organic ...

| | Ruts DC Rhythm Collision Reloaded CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
The 3rd Gift: Story, Song And Spirit
$15.15 This album has its origins in a more or less standard-issue pub rock band called Hit & Run; when that group fell apart, some of its alumni put together a punkier outfit called the Ruts. When the Ruts' drummer overdosed, the surviving members renamed themselves the Ruts D.C. (meaning "da capo," a musical annotation meaning "start again from the beginning") and started incorporating reggae more explicitly into their sound. The recorded results were a bit chaotic, but one release gained a foothold in the U.S. -- a set of what sounded like dub ...
