| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Looking Ahead CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. For newcomers to Zorn's music, this ...

Looking Ahead songs
$6.69 When he steps on stage, don't let the torn jeans and consistent rotation between bandana and stocking cap fool you. The music that pours from the hands and voice of 22-year-old Nathan James is sharp and, often times, beautiful. Switching off from keyboard to acoustic guitar, with a hint of harmonica, James' shows consist of solo performances with a majority of original compositions, mixing in covers of Ryan Adams, Ben Folds, Snow Patrol, and Damien Rice tunes among others. His original songs have been written over a span of the past five years -- a time period in which James moved back and forth between Iowa City and San Diego, observing the pains and joys of a young life. Recently, James is writing more than ever, constantly recording words and melodies from his mind, then turning them into full-length songs in his recording studio, which also acts as his one-room studio apartment in Iowa City. "I think Willie Nelson said, 'You can't go wrong if you always tell the truth.' I try to do that when I write," James said. "I try to write songs with tons of ambiguity and other songs that are completely straight forward. But they're always honest and almost always stemming from a personal event." Born in southeast Iowa, and currently based out of the state's cultural hub, Iowa City, James is doing everything in his power to make certain his music develops into a lifestyle rather than just a passion. James graduated from the University of Iowa last May with a degree in finance, which he hopes to never use. The degree hangs from his wall in his apartment, partly as a symbol of pride, but mostly as a reminder that he'd rather be sitting down at his keyboard than a desk. James began his music career as a classically trained opera singer. In the summer of 2002, James toured for a month through seven countries in Europe with the University of Nebraska Choir .. a school he chose not to attend despite a music scholarship offer. James has since developed ...

Looking Ahead songs
$16.45 Some music you listen to, some music you feel. Be it smoky and sensual or fiery and fierce, we all recognize the instant when our breaths catch, our pulses race, and our hearts know. In compiling this album, Sylvia Brooks has said 'I don't feel I chose these songs, but that they've chosen me.' And she may very well be right. Growing up in Miami, hearing her mother sing at the Eden Roc and Fountainebleau, and listening as her musician father played the canon of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in jazz clubs across the country, the road map of her musical tastes began to come almost imperceptibly together. And you can hear it all in this collection of songs, on a route that stretches from a palm-lined causeway connecting Miami to South Beach and its famed Latin Quarter nightclub, to its terminus in New York's Harlem at the legendary Cotton Club. From the bold proclamation of "When ...
