Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Amaray Case Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Cole, a local guy from Pittsburgh who is a copy-machine repairman by day (still living at home), and the lead singer of Blood Pollution, a Steel Dragon tribute band, at night. (Steel Dragon is a heavy-metal hair band living it big in the 1980s.) Cole prides himself on getting everything exactly right when he's onstage, every note, every costume, every shade of mascara; he even gets a nipple ring right after Steel Dragon's lead singer does. Chris's dream turns into reality when Steel Dragon fires its lead singer and brings Chris in to audition for the job. He gets the gig, but he also gets a lot more than he bargained for.
Wahlberg is brilliant as Cole, playing the role to perfection, both as the young dreamer and the rock star living to excess. Jennifer Aniston is also excellent as Emily, his longtime girlfriend and manager who stands by him for as long as she can. The music nails the 1980s heavy-metal explosion, both in the original songs that Steel Dragon plays and the incidental music, from such groups as Kiss, Jon Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Motley Crue, and Dio. As good as Wahlberg and Aniston are, Timothy Spall, as Steel Dragon's manager, nearly steals the picture. ROCK STAR is an invigorating, intoxicating, thrilling ride of a movie; at times it even feels like it's the true story behind Spinal Tap. (In fact, it is loosely based on the true story of Ripper Owens and Judas Priest.) As an added bonus, the film features, in small roles, musicians who have played with such metalheads as Dokken, Slaughter, Ozzy Osbourne, and more. Rock Star Reviews: "...[Wahlberg] becomes the spirit of heavy metal....Not since BOOGIE NIGHTS has Wahlberg created so winning and personal a character..."

-- Chris Norris, Film Comment "...[Spall] is charming....Mr. Stockwell and Mr. Herek balance mockery with affection..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...One-time teen-pop idol Mark Wahlberg is a good metal-mimic, and manifestly enjoys the strutting and the squealing..."-- Mark Sinker, Sight and Sound "...There are good performances and the period is well captured..."

"ROCK STAR" the Movie... I thought this movie did a great job at capturing life as a rock star and what goes on behind the scenes. For those of us who grew up on the 70's and 80's, we get to go back to the days of bands with long hair, lycra, and raunchy guitars. Mark Walberg does an excellent job portraying the lead singer in this movie, and I have to wonder if he actually did his own singing (he's that believable). Granted, there are portions of the storyline that are a little hard to fathom. (What are the odds your all-time favorite band is going to call you for an audition out of the blue?) Still, the lessons learned by the struggling artist who rises to star status almost overnight make this an enjoyable ride as we live the fantasy through one lucky man. But as the movie progresses, we learn that life as a rockstar may not be as glamorous as we might imagine.

Rock Star rocks! If you were born in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. Your going to love this movie. Being a "groupie" myself back in the mid 80's, this movie is right on target to the way it really is in the rock and roll world. The thing that makes the movie unique is how Ziggy makes it big. Maybe this doesn't happen in real life, but it isn't far fetched either. The music is good, the acting is good, and it's neat that they have some of the band members from some of the 80's bands acting in the movie. This is a must see movie. My 17 year old son liked it and he listens to rap! Try this movie, you won't regret it. Submitted by a reviewer (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Rock Star review
$9.69 THE HULK, adapted by Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER/HIDDEN DRAGON, THE ICE STORM) from the Marvel comic book series, stars Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, the tormented scientist whose temper periodically transforms him into a raging green monster. Fellow scientist and Hulk-love-interest Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly), shares a strange connection with Banner--both have abstract childhood nightmares that hint at a shared dark past. The missing pieces of the puzzle are revealed when Banner's unstable, mad-scientist father David (Nick Nolte) appears out of the blue, followed by Betty's father Ross (Sam Elliot), a military cowboy. Banner is ultimately trying to understand what it is that makes his strange and unpredictable metamorphosis occur, while his outbursts distract him, leading him out into the streets of San Francisco, to the Golden Gate Bridge, and on a tour of the American west's national parks where he unleashes his anger in violent tantrums. Posing a threat to the country that is treated like a natural disaster, the hulk attracts the attention of the military. They respond by chasing the hulk with helicopters, machine guys, and even heavy artillery, as he bounds away in mighty leaps, trying to escape. The CGI work used in creating the hulk is funny and convincing, and the gorgeous landscape photography makes his presence all the more amazing. A vibrant color scheme adds to the film's visual thrills, split-screen editing breaks up the slower scenes, and the music by composer Danny Elfman perfectly punctuates the contrast between the soft love story and wild action sequences. While parts of the film recall the introspection of FRANKENSTEIN, the outrageous crowd-pleasing monster-military chases hearken back to KING KONG and the GODZILLA movies.

$17.89 Another bittersweet comedy from acclaimed director Mike Leigh, HIGH HOPES weaves a wonderful tapestry of hippies and yuppies, fantasy and reality, broken dreams and high hopes. Lampooning every aspect of modern English society, the film is a biting satire with a dry sense of humor. Leigh allows his story to unfold at a realistic pace, granting his actors the time to better express the inner feelings and emotions of his zany cavalcade of characters.
