CHOICES is composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard's debut recording on the Concord label. And in a career with filled with many shifts and changes, it may be the most radical of all. The album was recorded in Blanchard's hometown of New Orleans at the Ogden Museum of Art and features his longtime cohorts, pianist Fabian Almazan, Derrick Hodge on bass, drummer Kendrick Scott, and Lionel Loueke on guitar. Saxophonist Walter Smith III joins the band here as well. In addition there are spoken word readings by intellectual, author, philosopher, and activist Dr. Cornel West, and vocals by neo-soul singer Bilal. With all this talent on hand, CHOICES is a meld of speculative post-bop, experimental yet accessible song forms, and one that might be best showcased in a live setting.

"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. Talk To Me is the title of the latest album from Philipp Fankhauser, the highly regarded blues artist based in Thun, Switzerland, and his first for Memphis International Records. Fankhauser is well known to European audiences but he is also familiar to North Americans as a result of his role as guest vocalist with the band of the late blues great Johnny "Clyde" Copeland. While the bulk of Talk To Me is comprised of l Fankhauser originals it does include two Johnny Copeland compositions and Shemekia Copeland, Johnny's daughter and a renowned star in her own right, penned the liner notes. Magali Luque's latest project is her solo CD entitled "Básica" (translated as "Basic Me"), a personal project with a variety of eclectic music performed on acoustic instruments. She journeys through a myriad of world rhythms, from pop ballads to funk, from guajira to bolero, from bossa to swing, leaving room for jazzy improvisations by singer and band alike. Her evocative lyrics in Spanish speak of being in and out of love, and the marriage of these to world beats create a distinctive style that only Magali’s soulful voice can express. Her music videos for the hit songs “Medicina perfecta” (Perfect Medicine) and “No voy a decĂrtelo” (I Won’t Tell You) receive constant airplay on Peruvian television and are available for viewing on YouTube.Among the gems in “Básica” are the bossa “Pensar en ti” (Thinking of you) with lyrics that dwell on romantic thoughts: “Magic, / is listening to your voice without saying anything/ feeling your gaze at every moment/ that enraptures me” and the swing “Duerme” (Sleep) with provocative scenes: “Sleep in my lap / I want to feel your skin / soft and sweet, salty as well, / of today and of tomorrow / but not of yesterday.” The ballad “Equivocadamente tuya” (Mistakenly Yours) sings to love lost with the powerful phrase: “Here I am, / mistakenly yours, / and there you are, / fitly far from me” as well as the bolero “Dime” (Tell Me): “Our sweet words have been frozen, / tenderness forgotten in some corner.”Other songs are a declaration of individualism and freedom, like “CanciĂłn básica” (Basic Song): “I like to laugh out loud / I like to get even sometimes, / I like the disorder of order, and the order of disorder” and the guajira “Vida de perro” (A Dog’s Life): “Highway life, / moonless nights, / if you find me, take me with you, / I’ll take care of you.” In all of Magali’s lyrics, there is passion and poetry, as in songs that deal with broken relationships: “Let your hands cover the weariness ...
