| | Colbie Caillat Breakthrough CD Colbie Caillat Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Colbie Caillat's breakthrough arrived before BREAKTHROUGH, when her debut COCO turned into a breezy surprise hit. BREAKTHROUGH isn't meant to catapult Caillat into a mainstream that already knows her, but to consolidate her success, so it's not entirely a surprise that the album bears evidence of her showbiz kid roots, a record that relies just a bit more on the studio than the song. It's a creation that's slicker and sleeker than the debut, but fortunately, it's not quite at the expense of Caillat's simple charms. The high-buff sheen on BREAKTHROUGH can mean that the songs glide down a little too smoothly, sliding down like a velvety pina colada, which is perhaps a bit too sophisticated after the everyday charms of COCO, and perhaps a little bit too polished for Colbie in general. Underneath all that gloss, Caillat remains a simple girl singing songs of love as light and crisp as a sugar cookie.

Breakthrough album
$15.19 Released in late 2006, HERE AND NOW finds country singer Darryl Worley on a new label (903 Music) and sporting a scruffier, long-haired look. With its more rocking, upbeat sound, the album leans a little bit towards Keith Urban, as well as Toby Keith, yet it still shows off Worley's own twangy, Tennessee-bred charm, most notably on the rollicking, defiant "Jumpin' Off the Wagon" and the lively, self-explanatory "Party Song."

| | Electric Light Orchestra Balance Of Power CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Breakthrough CD music
$7.59 1986's BALANCE OF POWER, the last ELO album to feature Jeff Lynne--the rest of the group re-convened as ELO Part II in the late '90s with cult-fave singer/guitarist Parthenon Huxley replacing Lynne--looks at first like a dubious attempt at '80s-style modernization. The cliched, dated graphics--and keyboard player Richard Tandy's red-flag credit for "programming"--notwithstanding, this is a fine example of Lynne's '80s work. The opening "Heaven Only Knows" is a catchy tune with Lynne's trademark overdubbed Beatlesque harmonies that would have fit in well on OUT OF THE BLUE or DISCOVERY. The rest of the album is less immediately enthralling, but that's due to the slightly antiseptic, MIDI-heavy production, not the caliber of the songs. Listening past the surfaces reveals these songs to be a solid set of tunes well in Lynne's tradition of melodic pop.
After mining the Beatles gold mine for all those catchy hooks, by the time that Balance of Power was released, Jeff Lynne and company had pretty much found that once-rich vein going dry. This album did contain yet another Top 40 hit with "Calling America," but by the mid-'80s, ELO were finding their audience and their inspiration on the wane. Not truly memorable, but passable. ...
| | Chayanne Mi Tiempo CD (2007)
Breakthrough music CDs
$10.09 On 2007's MI TIEMPO, Puerto Rican heartthrob Chayanne (born Elmer Figueroa de Arce) follows up the one-two punch of '05's DESDE SIEMPRE and CAUTIVO with another sterling set of Spanish-language pop. Led by the emotive power ballad "Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo," which perfectly suits Chayanne's slightly raspy voice, the album mixes other reflective songs with upbeat dance numbers, proving once again why the singer/actor has such a wide appeal.

| | Sheryl Crow Detours CD (2008)
Breakthrough songs
$13.75 More than 14 years after her lauded debut, Tuesday NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, Sheryl Crow reunited with that breakthrough album's producer, Bill Bottrell, for her 2008 outing, DETOURS. While both records are accomplished and willfully dynamic, DETOURS is the sound of someone who's been through a real emotional wringer, and, indeed, Crow had, having battled breast cancer, split from beau Lance Armstrong, and adopted a baby all shortly before these studio sessions.
The resulting tracks play to Crow's strengths as both a singer and a songwriter--while the spare, lo-fi opener, "God Bless This Mess," and the achingly tender closer, "Lullaby for Wyatt," highlight her emotive, slightly sandpaper-y vocals, the jangly "Love Is Free" and the sweeping "Love Is All There Is" are catchy, top-notch pop tunes. Making some stylistic DETOURS (witness the Middle-Eastern-tinged, Madonna-like "Peace Be Upon Us"), Crow also uses this collection to get topical, not only on some of the above-mentioned songs, but on the funky, petrol-addled narrative "Gasoline" and the beat-driven missive "Out of Our Heads." Both fiery and thoughtful, DETOURS nods back to the eclecticism of MUSIC CLUB, but it also points promisingly to Crow's ...
| | Colbie Caillat Coco: Summer Sessions CD (2007) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition
Breakthrough album
$10.85 On her 2007 debut, COCO, Los Angeles, California-based singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat offers up a charming set of R&B-tinged acoustic pop. Aided by her father, veteran producer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac), as well as multi-instrumentalist/producer Mikal Blue and vocalist/guitarist Jason Reeves, Caillat comes across as a female counterpart to fellow laid-back West Coast performer Jack Johnson, particularly on the light, ...

| | Sir Lord Eric Von Raven Please Throw Me Back In The Ocean CD (2009) Bonus Track
Breakthrough songs
$10.65 For someone who is presumably a member of the nobility, Sir Lord Von Raven sure doesn't seem very attuned to social niceties. A quick spin of his first album, Please Throw Me Back in the Ocean, suggests he's loud and boisterous in public, he speaks with impropriety about the fair sex, and I'd venture he enjoys expanding his consciousness through artificial means. But he does know a few things about rock & roll, and Please Throw Me Back shows he can throw a pretty good party; this album delivers some psych-addled garage rock with a healthy side portion of glam and some dance beats for garnish. More than a few acts following a similar path do so with tongue firmly in cheek, but Von Raven's straight-ahead cover of Fats Domino's "I'm Ready" testifies to the fact this guy likes his music real and rowdy, and the T. Rex-meets-Ramones wobble of "PC Action," the Stones-style strut of "What's a Boy to Do" and "Spit on Your Grave"'s old-school punk sneer demonstrate Von Raven and his band like a balanced diet representing the various fast 'n' loud food groups. Sometimes the willful sloppiness of the ...

Breakthrough CD music
$12.65 Since their inception in 2007, Supervolcano has quickly become one of the driving forces behind a growing resurgence in Boston’s indie rock scene. Comprised of a melting pot of influences, the band incorporates sweeping melodies, harmonic tension, and off-meter time signatures while texturizing their unique soundscapes with guitar effects and breakneck rhythms. Counting Glassjaw, Fugazi, Faraquet, Incubus, and At the Drive-In/Mars Volta among their musical mentors, Supervolcano has been able to capture the essence of their icons while creating something wholly their own. Their eponymous debut LP fully ...
| | Dementia Cookie Box Truth About Life (As Told By The Dementia Cookie B CD (2009)
Breakthrough music CDs
$8.55 The Dementia Cookie Box is a rock band hailing from Bowling Green, Kentucky. The band has been around in one form or another since 1996, when creator, Steven Baker, first starting writing music for the project in his hometown of Nicholasville, Kentucky. With styles ranging from acoustic love ballads to punchy, alternative rock songs (reminiscent, even at times, of the heydays of grunge), The Dementia Cookie Box are turning heads all around Kentucky with their seemingly fresh sound. The band released its first LP in 2006 as a free, online download. “The Truth About Life (as told by the Dementia Cookie Box)” was a look back at a decade’s worth of writing for the project by founding member, Steven Baker. On March 20th, 2007, the full-scale, sophomoric effort was released. “No Rest for Heroes,” which was produced by Matt Talbott (former RCA recording artist and front man from the 90s alternative rock band, HUM), is perhaps a wake-up call to people who are drowning in a sea of recycled pop ...
