| | Skillet Awake CD Skillet Discography of CDs
With a Grammy nomination and the sales figures to back it up, Skillet have merged as one of the most successful Christian rock bands of the `00s. Their 2009 effort, AWAKE, is a return to the harder-edged rock sound of the band's 2006 album COMATOSE. Melding raw, dissonant riffs with a soaring, anthemic builds and harmonizing, Skillet's passionate message is relayed in progressive-tinged rock that, while faith-based, is not lacking one bit in its sheer visceral power.

Awake
$10.45 It's a testament to the conviction of Breaking Benjamin that two of its members quit another band already signed to a major label to join what was, commercially, much less of a sure thing. SATURATE's success proved them right, though. A melting pot of post-grunge riffs, nu-metal power, and classic rock accessibility, Breaking Benjamin offers ...

| | Vassilis Tsabropoulos Achirana CD (2000)
Awake
$40.89 This piano trio has its roots in the elegant pianistic mysticism of Bill Evans and the exploratory restlessness of Paul Bley in similar setting, but the compositional and improvisational warmth of this trio writes its own name. Like many records on the ECM label, there is spaciousness in these proceedings that one would errantly label as "spare" or "sparse." The use of space is a different matter altogether, and that's what this band does: they use space as an architectural element in the creation of spontaneous and written composition. There are more than enough notes and rhythmic patterns to go around; it is their distribution and execution that sets them apart from those seekers of organized silences. As spontaneous compositions, the title track that opens the album and "Diamond Cut Diamond" are excellent examples in how to build harmonic tension methodically and gracefully while altering and stretching notions of time, rhythm, and durational space. Meter seems to float above the bandstand somewhere, ever threatening to enter, but never quite does. Tonal improvisation handled so gorgeously by Andersen is used as a means of collecting information from both Tsabropoulos and Marshall and carrying it back separated and organized in intervallic strategies that concentrate as much on mode as they do color and texture. It's communication via a gatekeeper, and what is transmitted is an altered reality in the form of another music on the way out than there was coming in. Elsewhere, on Tsabropoulos' "Mystic" a melody rife with major sevenths is liltingly played over counterpoint rhythm from Marshall. ...

| | Lee Ellen Shoemaker Inner Runes CD (1996)
Awake
$15.19 Lee Ellen Shoemaker is the Tunnel Singer, a performance artist who sings in tunnels, parking garages, and other spaces that offer lots of reverberation. Her work is unique and is showcased well on all of her recordings. Shoemaker's music utilizes vocal improvisation to unify random sounds, creating instruments of music from tunnels, stairwells, and parking garages that are hauntingly beautiful. She embraces a tonal language of emotional content that speaks from an organic and earthy, grounded place. Her powerful vocals are extremely warm and take the listener on a profound sonic journey. Her music could best be compared to Jim Cole & the Spectral Voices, David Hykes, and is quite similar Pauline Oliveros. The tracks that make up Inner Runes are excellent and speak to a profoundly resonant aesthetic. Shoemaker brings her work to life clearly and eloquently. This music is great for contemplation, listening, and daydreaming. Excellent work. ~ Matt Borghi
Lee Ellen Shoemaker is The Tunnel Singer, a San Francisco-based performance artist and vocalist. Born in Kokomo, Indiana in 1936, singing in spaces with long natural reverberation has been a passion since childhood. Shoemaker's mother and father taught her to harmonize with them. She enjoyed playing the family piano, but resisted learning to read music and practice scales, preferring to improvise. She remembers listening to music on the floor-model Philco radio, but favored tuning in unusual sounds between stations on short-wave bands. Her mother says that as a toddler she harmoniz-ed with the drone of the vacuum cleaner.Shoemaker studied painting, drawing and video at University of California, Davis, graduating in 1985. She often describes her music as painting with sound. Accepted for graduate studies at San Francisco State University’s Center for Experimental Interdisciplinary Art she studied Performance and Life Art. She took extensive cinema and script writing courses prior to transferring to the Instructional Technology Department where she earned a masters degree in multimedia development. Shoemaker improvised with a saxophone player she met in a Golden Gate Park tunnel in 1992. He convinced her to sing with him at Cafe International in San Francisco. After a few cafe ...

| | Amy Grant Legacy: Hymns & Faith CD (2002)
Awake
$10.65 This limited edition of LEGACY: HYMNS & FAITH includes a bonus DVD video directed by Ken Carpenter.
Long before the Christian pop movement began exploding in the late '90s, Amy Grant was at the forefront of the movement, one of the first singers to show that pop music sensibilities could be successfully mated with spiritual concerns outside the realm of gospel music. Ironically, it's the gospel tradition that Grant returns to on LEGACY: HYMNS & FAITH in order to celebrate her 25th anniversary as a recording artist (hard to believe it's been so long, isn't it?).
Though she draws mostly on traditional spiritual material here, as the album's title indicates, the production is consistently innovative. The atmospheric treatment given to "Softly and Tenderly" wouldn't have sounded out on place on Emmylou Harris's Daniel Lanois-produced WRECKING BALL ...
