(6 Customer Reviews)
John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change in the Weather." He can still raise an unholy ruckus however, wailing his way through Gene Simmons' rockabilly classic "Haunted House" and joyously duetting with Bruce Springsteen on the Everlys' "When Will I Be Loved." Still, RIDES AGAIN isn't a raucous rock & roll album; it's a relaxed good time, a little bit of cheerful nostalgia that's pretty charming.

Fogerty is at it again! John Fogerty is back with another late-career surprise, this time a sequel to his 1973 one-man-band effort "The Blue Ridge Rangers." Although he doesn't approach the one-man-band method on this one, he still sounds as stunning as ever with his great voice and guitar playing. He's backed by a great band, and the results are a bit looser compared to his 1973 effort. His choice of covers is excellent. On the Buck Owens tune, "I Don't Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)", not only does he sound so good, but it almost sounds like Buck Owens and his band are playing, and it's so stunning, it's almost scary. Everything else is superb, even his duets with Bruce Springsteen and 2 of the band members of The Eagles. Submitted by Ron Haynes, Jr. (Covington/Cornelia, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again music CDs
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the ...

Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again music CDs
$17.79 Like most young bands, Alquin proudly wore their influences on their sleeves, but unlike most of their fellow progressive rockers, the Dutch group eschewed opulent arrangements and showboat soloing. Simplicity seems to have been the byword for their 1973 debut album, MARKS, recorded while the members were still attending Delft's Technical University. This understandably led to the album being tagged as jazz-folk, but that label does injustice to the breadth of Alquin's vision and wide range of styles, with their songs encompassing everything from a conga line to disco, Dixieland to Gypsy violin. The unadorned arrangements counterintuitively make MARKS sound far less adventurous than it actually is, but correspondingly far more accessible than it might otherwise have been. It's also a reflection of the set's lack of improvisation, but live the band soared into more experimental territory, as "Mr. Barnum Junior's Magnificent and Fabulous City" well illustrates, an extended piece that giddily shape-shifts through numerous genres and styles. Contrast that number with the lilting in and out of pomp rock and jazz during "Oriental Journey," the cheery jazz-pop of "The Least You Could Do Is Send Me Some Flowers," or the moody jazz fusion of "Soft Royce"; it's like night and day. Even better, compare the ...
