His quarry, the irrepressible Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), accepts his offer for diction lessons in good faith, hoping to improve her station with a career as a shopgirl. This quintessential musical, scored by Lerner and Loewe, was based on the 1913 play PYGMALION by George Bernard Shaw, and virtually swept the Academy Awards, winning, among others, Best Picture, Director, and Actor (Harrison).
A priceless classic, MY FAIR LADY has become one of the most popular musicals of all time. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play PYGMALION, the film swept the Academy Awards. Cecil Beaton's lavish sets and costumes and Lerner and Loewe's winning score became the background for George Cukor's striking mix of styles that ranged from the fantastic to the abstract in his telling of the tale of a waif who's educated into being a lady. Egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins (Oscar-winning Rex Harrison) bets his friend, Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White), that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in time for an important society ball. His gamble could pay off--but the spirited Eliza is more of a handful than the Professor could have predicted. As she slowly becomes more refined, and less reliant upon him, Higgins realizes, to his confusion, that he can't live without her. The film was nominated for 12 Oscars and won eight, including Best Picture and Director.
Theatrical release: October 21, 1964.
Filmed at the Warner Bros. Studios.
One of the most expensive musicals ever, the estimated budget was $17 million.
Jack Warner reportedly paid $5.5 million to the Shaw estate for the rights to the musical; additionally, the owners of the stage property were to receive 47.5% of all proceeds after the first $20 million.
The Broadway musical MY FAIR LADY was staged by Moss Hart, produced by Herman Levin, and starred Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, and Stanley Holloway.
Warner didn't want to cast Julie Andrews in the film because she wasn't known enough in the U.S. at the time.
Vincente Minelli was the studio's first choice for director.
MY FAIR LADY was named Best Film by the New York Film Critics and one of the 10 Best Films of the Year by the National Board of Review.
Marni Nixon, who dubbed Audrey Hepburn's singing voice, had previously dubbed Natalie Wood's singing voice in WEST SIDE STORY and Deborah Kerr's in THE KING AND I. Many speculated that Hepburn was passed over for an Academy Award nomination because she did not do her own singing.
The voice for Jeremy Brett, who played Freddie Eynsford-Hill, was supplied by Bill Shirley.
Dr. Peter Ladefoged from UCLA served as phonetics advisor.
Actor Wilfrid Hyde-White served as "Ascot" advisor.
Cecil Beaton's screen credit reads Costumes, Scenery, and Production Designer, which in actuality referred to his work for the stage version of MY FAIR LADY. For the film, he was responsible for Costumes, Makeup and Hair.
George Bernard Shaw's straight play PYGMALION was adapted for the screen in 1938, starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller.

My Fair Lady Movie Review Great Classic I great romantic story about the transformation of a woman from that of a flower seller on the street to almost a princess like woman. Simply stunning Gorgeous to look at, luverly to hear. My only disappointment was Audrey, would have much rather seen Julie Andrews in the role. Thank goodness Marnie Nixon does Audrey's voice. Otherwise a perfect movie. Submitted by Lesley (Sydney Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

One of Hollywood's best Broadway musical films This is one of Hollywood's finest moments when it comes to adapting a Broadway musical for the stage. And what a musical! It has some of the loveliest tunes to have ever graced the stage and a book with real characters and dialogue, courtesy of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Rex Harrison reprises his Broadway role as does Stanley Holloway. Audrey Hepburn is the picture of Eliza Doolittle. The film manages to be quite faithful to the original play-nearly word for word- and retains much of the intimacy of the stage. Submitted by a reviewer (Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? $10.05 One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.

$7.09 While film history tends to favor actors and directors, there are a handful of cinematographers who are legends in their own right. Gabriel Figueroa was not only one of cinema's most talented men behind the camera, he was also one of Mexico's greatest artists, often drawing comparisons to Diego Rivera. Here's a double feature of his work to reminds all of us just what an enormous talent he had with light and lenses.

$51.74 Hot-tempered, self-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty Scarlett O'Hara, played to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Smug, rebellious, honest, blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett's first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vision. The romantic score is every bit as lush and dramatic as the photography, borrowing folk melodies from the Old South to make the tragic war concrete. Heavy nostalgic tones pervade the often witty dialogue and larger-than-life charms and faults of the leads. GONE WITH THE WIND stands among the greatest epic dramas ever filmed.

$10.85 Baltimore director John Waters's outrageous 1971 debut PINK FLAMINGOS burst onto the filmmaking scene like the ample flesh of its drag-queen star through the seams of a lamé dress. Conceived as a way to garner attention for Waters's fledgling career, this paean to bad taste certainly did just that--so much so that decades later, the film still retains the power to shock with its gleeful demolition of every known human taboo.
Waters's attempt at making the most vile and offensive movie ever made is aptly mirrored in his characters' competition for the title of "Filthiest Person Alive." Overweight transvestite and Waters muse Divine (aka Glen Milstead) stars as the current record holder, Babs Johnson, who lives in a trailer park with her trashy friend Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce), incestuous son Crackers (Danny Mills), and mentally-stunted mother Edie (Edith Massey), who spends her time in a playpen and is obsessed with eggs. Vying for Babs's filthy title is evil middle-class couple Raymond (David Lochary) and Connie Marble (Mink Stole), who fund porno shops, sell heroin to grade-schoolers, and run a white-slave trade that involves kidnapping young women, imprisoning them in their dungeon-like basement, raping and impregnating them, and selling their babies to lesbian couples. In between, there's sex with chickens, whistling rectums, actual fellatio, and canine excrement--ensuring not only gross-out comedy par excellence, but a total assault on bourgeois respectability that rivals the comparatively mild critique of UN CHIEN ANDALOU or L'AGE D'OR. Disgusting, hilarious, and utterly fabulous, PINK FLAMINGOS is guerrilla filmmaking at its finest.

$14.79 1996. Directed by Marek Koterski. Polish language. English subtitles. This is a black comedy about the life of a filmmaker. “Damn it!” says director Adam Miauczynski, “Nothing funny has happened to me in my bloody life”. Adam Miauczynski (Cezary Pazura) always seems to have bad luck. He is unsuccessful in his career and in his relationships with women. He has a difficult time functioning in normal society because he lacks common sense, and his life is full of avoidable mishaps. This laugh-out-loud comedy is perfect for anyone who has ever had things go wrong.

$15.65 Credited with inventing the genre of the modern horror film, PSYCHO has had its share of sequels and imitators, none of which diminishes the achievement of this shocking and complex horror thriller. Alfred Hitchcock's choreography of elements in PSYCHO is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchcock's black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins's haunting characterization of lonely motel keeper Norman Bates, has never been equaled. Bates presides over an out-of-the-way motel under the domineering specter of his mother. The young, well-intentioned Bates is introduced to the audience when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a blonde on the run with stolen money, checks in for the night. But Momma doesn't like loose women, so the stage is set for this classic tale of horror--and one of the most famous scenes in film history. PSYCHO was initially received by audiences with shock and amazement--and it still terrifies today. Though it is now considered prototypical Hitchcock, its setting, pace, and emphasis on terror were major departures for the director at the time, coming after the more classically grand NORTH BY NORTHWEST.
