In this notorious film version of the popular French comic strip by Jean-Claude Forest, Jane Fonda plays a sexy yet innocent space-age heroine in the year 40,000 A.D. who never gets herself into a situation that requires too much clothing. BARBARELLA opens with the titular heroine stripping down to nothing in zero gravity among strategically placed credits. From there Barbarella embarks on a mission to find a peace-threatening young scientist named Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea) by order of the president of Earth. En route, she's attacked by killer dolls, is strapped into a contraption known as the Excessive Machine, and falls in love with a blind angel. Remaining true to its comic book origins, Barbarella's adventure unfolds in a series of dramatic difficulties and unlikely solutions, making for a galloping pace and never-ending opportunities for Mario Garbuglia's hallucinatory set design to dazzle. With guest appearances by 1960s icons Anita Pallenberg, Marcel Marceau, and David Hemmings, and featuring dialogue by novelist Terry Southern, among others, BARBARELLA is not only a comic sci-fi sex romp but also a sly, tongue-in-cheek portrait of the legendary debauchery of that era.

Theatrical release: October 10, 1968. The 1980s rock group Duran Duran took their name from the eponymous villain in BARBARELLA. Interestingly enough, Fonda was married to director Roger Vadim at the time of production.

Barbarella Quotes/Excerpts:

"I'll do things to you that are beyond all known philosophies. Wait untill I get my devices!"--Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea) to Barbarella (Jane Fonda).

5 stars My Favorite Movie Ever
I saw this on it's first theatrical run as a teenager, and it has been my favorite film ever since. This DVD is a very nice 16 by 9 transfer of this fun movie! And in my opinion, the cheesy special affects actually make this movie more endearing. Jane has nothing to be ashamed of here, as she is quite beautiful and very funny. The print that was used needs some restorative work, but it looks great on an HD set, and the sound quality is good as well, considering it is monophonic. It would be great if they did a special edition of this some day while some of the cast members can still participate. But that probably won't happen until another Barbarella movie gets made. Highly, highly recommended!

5 stars Mindblowing
I first heard about this flick when I was 10 or 11 but didn't get to see it 'til I was in my early 40s. Not only did it live up to my expectations, it so far surpassed them as to be unmeasurable. Sure, the story is silly but the visuals are absolutely incredible and the writing is quite fun. Only an old fuddyduddy could rate this movie with just one star.

Picking up where NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD left off, and still offering no explanation of why the dead are walking the earth, DAWN OF THE DEAD plunges headlong into one of the most violent and original horror films ever made. After securing an apartment building overcome with flesh-eating zombies, two Philadelphia area SWAT team members, Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott Reiniger), flee to a television station, where they escape in the station's helicopter with Francine (Gaylen Ross) and Stephen (David Emge), two station employees. Seeking refuge from the zombies and the ensuing hysteria, they land on top of a Pittsburgh area shopping mall, despite the fact that the undead seem to be flocking there. What begins as a stop for supplies becomes a longer stay as the four become embroiled in a futile war within the mall to keep their flesh to themselves and remain alive. The film's relentlessly disturbing and innovative gore effects are one reason to see DAWN OF THE DEAD, but those who can stomach the endless barrage of blood and gnarled zombie faces will be rewarded--and possibly surprised--by what the film says about human nature and life within a consumer-based culture. Any aficionado of horror is likely to place the film high on their list of revered cinema. Soundtrack English; Director's Comments; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; DTS Sound

Don Coscarelli's BUBBA HO-TEP finds Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) alive but not so well, living in a small Texas nursing home. Although he's preoccupied with his ailments and his memories, the elderly Elvis befriends another resident who thinks he's John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis) when they both begin to suspect that their neighbors aren't dying of natural causes. Their investigation leads to the discovery of an evil mummy with a fondness for cowboy gear and an appetite for the souls of senior citizens. Armed with little more than a walker and a wheelchair, the King and JFK must take on this ancient evil. Based on a short story by Joe R. Lansdale, BUBBA HO-TEP mixes comedy, drama, and horror to create a remarkably quirky film. As the aged and ailing Elvis, Campbell gives an outstandingly funny and poignant performance, while Davis exudes intelligence and warmth as JFK. Although horror is a key element of the story, much of the movie focuses on the life of Elvis and his new friendship with the former president, leading to many oddly comical scenes and even a few genuinely touching moments. Of course, their embalmed foe and his creepy minions must be confronted, making this the first movie about Elvis and JFK to appeal to horror enthusiasts, or, conversely, the first horror movie to appeal to Elvis and JFK enthusiasts. Either way, it's a highly unconventional tale that no adventurous filmgoer should miss. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles

Established in the 1960s, the Hare & Hound Classic is one of the world's premier off-road motorcycle races, taking racers through the Mojave Desert into some of the harshest racing terrain imaginable. The legendary event was still in its infancy when acclaimed sports documentarian Bruce Brown (THE ENDLESS SUMMER, ON ANY SUNDAY) traveled to California to film the 1967 Hare & Hound Classic, which included professional racers J.N. Roberts, Buck Smith, and Larry Berquist among its 800 participants. Co-edited by Wes Brown (Bruce's grandson) and his filmmaking partner, T.J. Barrack, BAJA 1000 CLASSIC assembles Brown's never-before-released footage into a high-adrenaline documentary that serves as a historic look at the dawn of off-road motorcycle racing. This shojo anime focuses on the relationship between two girls named Chikane and Himeko, who attend a school tucked deep within a beautiful forest. The two are reincarnations of the Solar and Lunar Miko, priestesses whose love for each other is as strong as their sense of duty to the higher power. Their pleasant days are disrupted, however, when an ancient evil known as the Orochi begins attacking them, threatening them both with death and destruction. Now, the darkest forces of the universe threaten to kill them both, and only their devotion to each other can save their school and the world--unless it manages to drive a wedge between them. KANNAZUKI NO MIKO infamously draws a conclusion to its emotional storyline after the credits of the last episode, leaving the story unresolved for many viewers who stopped watching before the final moment. Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox) and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello (Erik Estrada) were two Los Angeles-based highway patrol officers who rode into the imaginations of millions of TV viewers in the late 1970s and early '80s. Each episode saw the boys straddling their magnificent machines and riding off to solve some crimes--and the sight of Ponch and Baker riding through California on their bikes has become an iconic image in television history. Equal parts comedy and crime drama, the series offered plenty of outrageous moments and spectacular freeway stunts. This collection presents the first two seasons of the show.
