In DEAD AGAIN, an L.A. detective's humdrum life is shaken up by the appearance of a beautiful woman suffering from amnesia. Her memory returns in a series of increasingly violent flashbacks, some of which date back to a former life in which the detective was her possibly homicidal husband.
In Kenneth Branagh's stylish suspense film, Branagh stars as Mike Church, a Los Angeles detective who is drawn into the life of Grace (Emma Thompson), a woman with amnesia who is plagued by disturbing nightmares. Attempts to help her regain her memory bring them to Franklyn Madson (Derek Jacobi), a mysterious hypnotist who runs an antique shop. Under hypnosis, Grace claims that in a previous life she was Margaret Strauss, a concert pianist who was murdered by her jealous husband, Roman. Further sessions lead her to believe that Mike is actually Roman reincarnated and that the two are destined to re-create the murder. Mike must then attempt to solve two mysteries--the real identity of Grace and the true story behind a 40-year-old crime. Branagh's taut thriller also features Robin Williams, Andy Garcia, and Campbell Scott. Theatrical release: August 23, 1991.
Robin Williams stars in the film as Dr. Cozy Carlisle. Williams also appears in Branagh's HAMLET.
Derek Jacobi's stuttering in the film is a reference to his famous role as the Roman emperor Claudius in I, CLAUDIUS.
Patrick Swayze's mother, choreographer Patsy Swayze, coached both Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson for the 1940s-style dance scene in the movie.
Costume designer Phyllis Dalton previously worked on many notable British films such as DR. ZHIVAGO and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. She won her second Oscar for the Branagh film HENRY V. Dead Again Quotes/Excerpts: "What I believe, Mr. Baker, is that this is all far from over."--Roman Strauss (Kenneth Branagh) to Gray Baker (Andy Garcia) Dead Again Reviews: "...A giddy whirling dervish of a movie that serves as a stylish and witty sonnet to the ghosts of Hollywood past..."
-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "...A big, convoluted, entertainingly dizzy romantic mystery melodrama....Another coup de cinéma for [Branagh]..."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "...It's fun to see somebody revive the amnesia genre....[Thompson is] appealing in both of her roles..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today Dead Again Movie Review Almost too Clever for Itself Talk about plots within plots, twists on twists, this marvelous movie has them. We first enjoyed this film years ago in a theatre and have just enjoyed it again -- and plan to do so, a least a few more times. Branagh and Thompson were made for each other -- too bad they split the blanket. Submitted by wordsmithe (Pensacola, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A REINCARNATION & MURDER MYSTERY MOVIE DONE BRILLIANTLY!! Kenneth Branaugh along with then wife, Emma Thompson, with a supporting cast of very impressive industry names do a BEAUTIFUL job of unfolding this murder mystery before our eyes.
SYNOPSIS: A Private Detective (Branagh) is asked by a priest to help a woman who is suffering from amnesia (Thompson) to find out who she is and, in the process, he uncovers some remarkably interesting facts about her, himself and, oh, other fascinating things.
Robin Williams is deeply disturbing and positively CREEPY as a grocer, Derek Jacobi as a antiques dealer & hypnotist is excellent and Andy Garcia as a newspaper reporter who causes romantic troubles (for Branaugh & Thompson's characters) does a truly impressive job.
The script is imaginative and EXCELLENT. There is NOTHING wrong or short about this movie. WOW!!! Submitted by a reviewer (New York, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Not for the faint of heart If ever there was a thriller that lived up to the cliche's: "suspensful...totally engrossing...a white knuckle ride" then it is "Dead Again". World class performances by Branagh, his then wife Emma Thopmson and Derek Jacobi, along with guess-where-it's-going-next writing provide a thrill ride far above the average. Look for wonderfully understated performances from Robin Williams (uncredited if memory serves), Andy Garcia and "Seinfeld's" Wayne Knight.
Wonderfully creepy and..."totally engrossing". Submitted by thomdrums (lakeland, Fl) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Dead Again DVD
$15.59 Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

$31.15 The Showtime original series BROTHERHOOD spins the well-worn crime genre with this Cain-and-Abel story of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. Based on the real-life case of the Bulger brothers, the series takes place in an Irish-American, working-class neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island, known as The Hill. There, Tommy Caffee (Jason Clarke) is a straightlaced, up-and-coming politician while his brother, Michael (Jason Isaacs), aspires to be the biggest crime boss in the gangster underworld. Their equally cutthroat occupations have more in common than they might think. A taut character study punctuated by scenes of SOPRANOS-like violence, BROTHERHOOD's final season is presented in its entirety with this collection.
