Poppiholla album
$11.49 Tricky made a low-key entrance onto the music scene as a guest vocalist on Massive Attack's 1991 classic Blue Lines. There was little indication that he would resurface four years later with an album as powerfully unsettling as Maxinquaye. Accompanied by the sweet-voiced Martine, Tricky takes the listener on a tour of the dark corridors of his mind, dealing exclusively in paranoia and obsession. The striking rhythms of stand-out tracks 'Overcome', 'Hell Is Round The Corner' and 'Suffocated Love' merge seamlessly with a hard-rock reworking of Public Enemy's 'Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos' and the warped soul of 'Abbaon Fat Tracks' to create one of the 90s' most compellingly atmospheric records.
Composers: Hank Shocklee; Howie B; Carlton Ridenhour; E. Sadler; Tricky.

| | B-Tribe Fiesta Fatal! CD (1994)
Poppiholla music CDs
$9.29 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. The title track is a rousing instrumental that fuses techno with samplings of the Irish traditional ballad, "She Moved through the Fair" (referred to as "Belfast Child"), with a haunting vocal over a mix of percussion elements, synthesizer pads, and more flamenco. (Imagine Gypsy Kings mixing an album with Deep Forest). The track appears twice more, as a reprise and extended club remix. Another highlight is a reworking of an old Vangelis tune, here called "You Won't See Me Cry," wherein seductive spoken word whispers contrast with the impassioned Gypsy elements. Subsequent Tribe CDs would get more ethereal and languid but this debut has shown formidable staying power as a favorite of everyone from massage therapists to hardcore ravers.
The influential 1995 debut from the Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters (AKA the reclusive German maestro known as "The Brave") set the gold standard for world fusion, with its unique mix of Gypsy wailing, flamenco guitar, breathy female vocals, Germanic techno/house beats, and brain-cooling keyboard ambience.
Personnel: The Barcelona Tribe Of Soulsters.
| | Way Out West CD (1997) (Import) Germany
Poppiholla songs
$13.15 Ten tracks from Way Out West unfold on this eponymously titled album, which finds them crafting an uplifting house sound for legendary dance label Deconstruction.
Although Way Out West began their career in straight-ahead house, the duo works through many different forms on their album debut. "Domination" ascends into airy drum'n'bass territory after a mainstream intro, while tracks like "King of the Funk" and "Drive By" get more than a little aggressive, in contrast to the easygoing funk of "Questions Never Answered." Altogether, Way Out West is a varied, engaging debut. ~ John Bush
Includes the dance hit 'The Gift'. Currently out of print in the USA.
| | Kraftwerk Autobahn CD (1974) Remastered
Poppiholla album
$15.65 Germanic in approach and delivery, this record gets under the skin and infuriates as you find yourself compelled to hum the melodies. A significant record in the development of electronic music, and not to be confused with other "kraut rock" efforts from the school of mid-70s prog, this is the album from which countless bands borrowed riffs--passages of the Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and New Order are to be found among the five lengthy tracks. Don't be fooled: Kraftwerk were there at least five years in advance. Great for driving on the motorway in Europe, incidentally!
Lyricists: Emil Schult; Florian Schneider.
Personnel: Florian Schneider (flute, synthesizer, vocoder, electronic drums, electronics).
| | Aerosmith Greatest Hits (1972-1979) CD (1980) Remastered
Poppiholla CD music
$6.25 This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos, and artwork.
Longtime Aerosmith fans are likely to quibble about the set list here. How to pare down one of rock's all-time greatest and longest-running rock bands to 18 songs? Even so, 2006's DEVIL'S GOT A NEW DISGUISE: THE VERY BEST OF AEROSMITH does an admirable job, offering a single-disc crash course in the group's biggest and best-known tunes.
Ranging from the their 1970s heyday throughout their astonishing late '80s comeback and beyond, DEVIL'S plays like a feel-good hard-rock radio revival. Old-schoolers will be happy to find the staples--"Dream On," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion"--while second-generation Aerosmith fans will find blockbuster MTV fare like "Cryin'" and "Crazy." The band's patented boogie shuffle is accounted for on "Back in the Saddle" and "Rag Doll," among others. Two new tracks, one of which gives the album its title, are also included.
Originally decried by critics as an American rip-off of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith blew these criticisms away by going on to become the biggest and best hard rock band of the '70s. Fronted by funky and fast-talking Steven Tyler, Aerosmith was anchored by the rock-solid rhythm tandem of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, while guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were the instrumental gunslingers of the band.
Much of Aerosmith's appeal lies in the band's outlaw personas, particularly on such incendiary cuts as "Back in the Saddle" and the equally powerful "Draw the Line." The flip side of these nuggets were arena anthems like the prototype power ballad "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," a simmering classic written by Tyler about Perry's wife. Unlike many hard rock bands of the time whose sound was solely rooted in heavy blues-rock, Aerosmith was an unabashed fan of pop. Not only did the band cover the Beatles ("Come Together") and The ShangriLas ("Remember [Walking in the Sand]), but paid tribute to James Brown by wri
