Deluxe Edition
Personnel: Matthew Bachand, Jonathan Donais (vocals, guitar); Brian Fair (vocals); Jason Bittner (drums). Photographer: Jeremy Saffer. Despite building a large fan base and enjoying chart success, Massachusetts metallists Shadows Fall found themselves label-less prior to sessions began for their sixth studio album, 2009's RETRIBUTION. But everything worked out in the end, with the group collaborating with Warner Bros. Records on a new label venture, Everblack Industries. Any label snafus have not affected the way the lads go about their business, as RETRIBUTION follows the same game plan as latter-day Shadows Fall releases--raging metal tempered with some melody. And it takes very little time to show that guitarist Jonathan Donais is a frontrunner in the "modern-day six-string gymnastics" department, as he gets downright Yngwie on us with his solo in "My Demise." Elsewhere, you'll find ditties that at various times, cross over into thrash metal, death metal, and hardcore metal territory, especially "War," "King of Nothing" (not to be confused with the similarly-titled Metallica tune), and "Embrace Annihilation." Shadows Fall have made quite the roaring return with Retribution. ~ Greg Prato
Alternative Press (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[F]eaturing plenty of headbanging riffs and screaming solos, all leading into big, sing-along choruses. It's a solid modern metal record..." Billboard (pp.28-29) - "[T]racks like 'The Taste of Fear' and 'Still I Rise' reflect a newfound economy of purpose..." Personnel: David Vincent (vocals, bass guitar); Trey Azagthoth (guitar, keyboards); Pete Sandoval (drums). Audio Mixer: Flemming Rasmussen. Recording information: Morrisound Studios, Tampa, FL. Photographer: Luton Sinfield. Covenant started to bring Morbid Angel up out of the underground, as MTV gave them wider exposure on its late Headbanger's Ball. Guitarist Trey Azagthoth plays complicated, heavily detuned riffs, some with a lightning-fast picking style and others in a slower groove. Drummer Pete Sandoval is one of the genre's fastest, and his jackhammer style helps complete Morbid Angel's core sound. Their incredible chops and nonstop intensity may be exactly what you've been looking for, or you may find the lack of variation wearisome. ~ Steve Huey Covenant started to bring Morbid Angel up out of the underground, as MTV gave them wider exposure on its late Headbanger's Ball. | | Mike Stern Play CD (1999)
Retribution
$9.29 Personnel: Mike Stern (guitar); Bob Malach (tenor saxophone); Jim Beard (keyboards); John Scofield, Bill Frisell (guitar); Lincoln Goines (bass); Dennis Chambers, Ben Perowsky (drums). Principally recorded at Litho Studios, Seattle, Washington in December 1998 and Avatar Studios, New York, New York in January 1999. Personnel: Mike Stern (guitar); Bill Frisell, John Scofield (guitar); Bob Malach (tenor saxophone); Jim Beard (keyboards); Dennis Chambers, Ben Perowsky (drums). Audio Mixer: Joe Ferla. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (12/1998-01/1999); Kampo Studios, NY, NY (12/1998-01/1999); Litho Studios, Seattle, WA (12/1998-01/1999). Photographer: Roy Zipstein. Mike Stern is a preeminent guitarist for two key reasons: One, he can play all styles very well and with equal command; and two, he plays very well with all other players. He always shows great respect for those with whom he is playing and gives them each the time and space to develop their musical ideas. Stern displays these two qualities in abundance on Play. Several notable guests join Stern and his core band for this release. Guitarists John Scofield and Bill Frisell and drummer Dennis Chambers each team with Stern on several tracks. If you enjoy straight-ahead jazz, listen to Stern and Scofield on the title track, or mix in Bob Malach's tenor sax on "Outta Town." If you like your guitar music slightly more spacious and lyrical, try Stern and Frisell on the hypnotic "Blue Tone" or the pensive "All Heart." Finally, if you want to turn up the heat and move into some rock/funk-influenced fusion, then check out the groovy "Tipatina's," the bold rocker "Link," or the intensely funky "Big Kids." It is no surprise, based on his other work, that Chambers, in particular, gives the band a kick in the musical pants inspiring bassist Lincoln Goines to enjoy the ride. Play is an outstanding guitar album from the highly accomplished and incredibly versatile Mike Stern. It is highly recommended. ~ Brian Bartolini PLAY finds guitar ace Mike Stern alongside two other modern guitar masters, John Scofield and Bill Frisell. The results are stunning, to say the least. Though each of the three guitarists has a distinctive sound and style, an unmistakable camaraderie develops over the course of the album. Also along for the festivities is a cast of Stern's usual hired hands that includes Jim Beard, Bob Malach, Lincoln Goines, and drummers Ben Perowsky and Dennis Chambers. It is the powerful work of Stern, Scofield, and Frisell, however, that is the focus on this session. Scofield steps up first as he and Stern take the first three tracks together. On the exciting title track, the two spar ferociously on the intricate theme and burning solos. The New Orleans groove of "Small World," familiar sonic territory for ...
