After New Orleans hospice worker Caroline (Kate Hudson) answers a help wanted ad, she finds herself working as the live-in caretaker of Ben Devereaux (John Hurt), a stroke victim who has lost his ability to speak. Ben's wife, Violet (Gena Rowlands), presents Caroline with a skeleton key to open any door in the house--with the exception of one, which she claims she has never been able to open. But curiosity gets the best of her, and Caroline opens the door to find a wealth of materials representing the old house's history of hoodoo, an ancient form of folk magic. She soon discovers that the house harbors a dark secret--one that Violet knows more about than she first admits. Breaking her string of lighthearted romantic comedies, Kate Hudson gives a performance that proves she's more than capable of playing a feisty damsel in distress. Ehren Kruger's (THE RING) script gives her some physically demanding scenes, while providing the audience with a steady string of effective jolts culminating in a SIXTH SENSE-style twist that few are likely to see coming. Louisiana's swampy, heavy atmosphere is literally a character in the film, while Gena Rowlands, at age 75, astounds once again with one of her most surprising roles.

Skeleton Key Reviews:

"[T]he performances are full-throttle, with Hudson as the most pig-headedly fearless heroine in years, making good on her ALMOST FAMOUS promise." -- Nick Hasted, Uncut

"[A] basic bayou thriller distinguished by a very self-conscious subversive streak..." -- Scott Brown, Entertainment Weekly

3 stars The surprise ending scared me the most!
The surprise ending scared me the most but, I didn't like the idea of the ghost getting away with every thing.

3 stars Creepy
This film reminded me of the early scenes in the Exorcist with things going bump in the shadows. I found it to be quite spooky, and I didn't figure out the surprise ending as I often do.

MI VIDA LOCA is a compelling look at a microcosm of East L.A.'s Echo Park. Writer and director Allison Anders (GAS FOOD LODGING) lived in the neighborhood for many years with her daughter, inspiring her to make this film about life in a Latina girl gang. The film is sympathetic to these young women, presenting their stories honestly and with a visual flair that the subjects themselves would probably appreciate. The stories are told as a series of vignettes with different narrators, each with his or her perspective on the events portrayed. This approach allows the characters the opportunity to explain their actions, giving the audience a better understanding of behavior they might otherwise easily condemn. The key players are Mousie (Seidy Lopez) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles), best friends who let local drug dealer Ernesto (Jacob Vargas) come between ...

A ragtag group of forest critters awakes from hibernation to find that their forest has been turned into a suburban housing development in this animated film co-directed by Tim Johnson (ANTZ) and first-timer Karey Kirkpatrick, and based on a comic strip by Michael Fry and T Lewis. Paternal turtle Verne (Gary Shandling) and his makeshift family--spunky skunk Stella (Wanda Sykes), speedy squirrel Hammy (Steve Carrell), dramatic father opossum Ozzie (William Shatner), and his perpetually embarrassed daughter Heather (Avril Lavigne)--are ready to start the annual forage for food when they discover a giant hedge where their forest used to be. Luckily, charming raccoon RJ (Bruce Willis) shows up just in time to teach them about humans and life on the other side of the hedge, and how much food there is to be had. But what Verne and his pals don't know is that RJ's intentions are not necessarily honorable: this loner needs the food they forage to pay back a large debt to Vincent, a very large, angry bear (Nick Nolte). To make matters more difficult, on the other side of the hedge is Gladys (Allison Janney), the president of the neighborhood homeowner's association, who doesn't take kindly to wild animals. When she calls in the Verminator, Dwayne (Thomas Haden Church), it's all-out war as the animals infiltrate ...

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally ...

George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead
George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead DVD  (2005)

Skeleton Key film
DVD $9.55
Zombie movies slip in and out of fashion, but it's always a special occasion when the man who helped turn the undead into a worldwide phenomenon decides to add an installment to his ongoing saga of flesh-eating films. George A. Romero's zombie movies have all appeared in different decades, beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968, DAWN OF THE DEAD in '78, and DAY OF THE DEAD in '85. Romero skipped the '90s, but a zombie renaissance in the early 21st century (28 DAYS LATER, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) finds him back in the directors chair. Often seen as allegories for their times, Romero's films have been connected to societal events such as the consumerism of the '70s (DAWN OF THE DEAD) and the spread of the AIDS virus in the '80s (DAY OF THE DEAD). With 2005's LAND OF THE DEAD, Romero positions the bulk of his story in a giant skyscraper which houses the last humans left on the planet; although his intentions are foggy this time, LAND appears to be Romero's commentary on the post-9/11 political landscape. The zombies only bother crews who venture outside the makeshift city for supplies, but the people are kept sedated by their leader, the irascible Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), who exaggerates their threat. What Kaufman doesn't realize is that the zombies are learning skills they half-remember from their old ...

The lines between mental breakdown and externalized predation blur for a poor young woman in LEFT BANK, director Pieter van Hees's moody and enigmatic psychological thriller. Eline Kuppens stars as Marie, an emotionally troubled and socially isolated girl from a broken family, who finds meaning in her life by committing to intense athletic competition. Sadly, Marie catches an infection, which triggers an immediate physical collapse and forces her to rest for a lengthy period of time. She nonetheless finds solace in a new paramour, the archer Bobby (Matthias Schoenaerts). He not only imparts reassurance and provides an emotional anchor, but exudes an optimism and a zeal for life that prove contagious and even prompt Marie's ...
