| It grows on you Another scintillating guitar extravaganza from the "master of the telecaster" Robin Trower. Robin actually sings on this album but it's the guitar that will take you far away. This might be his best album since the departure of the late, great Jimmy Dewar. Even Trowers' vocals will grow on you after awhile, with several songs recalling Hendrix' breathy singing on Electric Ladyland. For Trower fans, a true feast! | Great new material This is a great record all the way thru, and I got a big kick out of hearing Robin sing his songs. I guess we all knew he was a talented guy, right? It's a pretty mellow set, the recording is very good, the guitar playing is outstanding and true to form. He really sounds hendrixy on some of these songs I think because he is playing and singing, just really grooving. So this is a serious effort and Robins written diary and vocals give us great insight into our hero! By evalsch (Livemore, CA, USA) This review is for a different format. |
| Not the trower I love I personally found this music hard to listen to and I'm a big trower fan now owning all his music out and disappointed with this CD maybe I'm missing the intent of the direction taken but Robin thanks for all the memories! | Great diversity, and well recorded. Very good offering from Robin Trower. The instrumentals are really soothing and almost jazz-like on a few numbers. I for one like Robin's vocals on this CD as they blend really well with his rockin-blusey style of guitar. If you like classic Trower then you will want to add this to your collection. Very solid indeed!!! By johnny (Muncie, IN.) This review is for a different format. |
| Nice surprise Contrary to the descrition listed for this cd, this is not Trowers first attempt at handling all the vocals on one of his records. That distinction belongs to the '97 release of Someday Blues, (which was later re-released as Another Days Blues, with Davey Pattison replacing Robins vocal tracks). That being said, I find the vocals on this record to be a much better match for the material than his previous attempt. And though he may not be the greatest singer, I think his vocals really are a plus to the overall feel of this album. As far as the main reason for listening to Trower, the guitar playing, you can't go wrong with this one. And as much as I had anticipated his previous release, Seven Moons with Jack Bruce, I find What Lies Beneath to be a better "guitar" record. The songs on here may lean a little bit more towards the slower end of the scale, but that's ok by me. Few guitarists can make their guitars smolder and burn during a slow groove song like Trower has done his whole career and this record is no exception. If you're a fan of Trowers guitar playing, I would get this cd. By tmy2k (Yonkers,NY) This review is for a different format. |
