Dance bands seem to have an endless supply of remixes at their disposal -- rarely heavy metal bands. But not if you're Fear Factory. Due to the group's fondness for industrial sounds that often border on "dancefloor-friendly," this shouldn't come as a surprise, as the 2003 compilation Hatefiles ties up all the loose ends -- collecting remixes, demos, and rarely heard tracks. Tops here include the original tracks "Terminate" and "Demolition Racer" (both of which were previously wallowing in "soundtrack land"), a demo version of the Digimortal favorite "Dark Bodies," and a slamming instrumental track, "Machine Debaser." But it's the overabundance of pointless remixes that will make Hatefiles only of interest to hardcore fans -- save for a "Numanoid Mix" of "Cars," which pushes Gary Numan's voice more to the forefront. These type of compilations are usually assembled once a band has split up, and in 2003, many assumed Fear Factory was over (due to the exit of founding guitarist Dino Cazares). Shortly after the release of Hatefiles, however, it was announced that Fear Factory would be carrying on without Cazares, which makes the timing of the arrival of Hatefiles a bit puzzling. ~ Greg Prato
Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered digipak edition of this compilation album of rare, unreleased and remixed tracks originally released in 2003. The album is notable as it contains 'Terminate', the last song to be recorded with original guitarist Dino Cazares. The collection also includes the original track 'Demolition Racer', a demo version of 'Dark Bodies', and a slamming instrumental track, 'Machine Debaser'. 2009.

It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE ...

One could write a book about all the things that have changed in metal and hard rock since 1989, when Axxis' debut album, Kingdom of the Night, came out. Grunge made alternative rock mainstream, death metal and black metal became incredibly plentiful (especially in Scandinavia), gothic metal excited Europe, and metalcore took hardcore to a decidedly vicious extreme. But those post-`80s developments have had very little, if any, effect on Axxis, whose 2009 release, Utopia, sounds like it could have been recorded 20 years earlier. The musical recipe that these German headbangers unveiled on Kingdom of the Night -- which combined elements of power metal, pop-metal and prog-rock and emphasized fantasy-based lyrics -- is alive and well on Utopia. Stylistically, tracks like "Last Man on Earth," "Sarah Wanna Die," and "Eyes of a Child" are stuck in the `80s; from the shiny guitar solos to the glossy production to the big melodies and big hooks, Utopia is 49 minutes of unapologetic `80s worship. ...
