Those who only know Udo Dirkschneider from his German metal band Accept, which (via "Balls to the Wall") enjoyed a shimmer of success during the '80s metal heyday in the U.S., won't find any surprises with his newer project, U.D.O. The latter group's genesis actually goes back to the late '80s, after the split of Accept (who would reunite in the mid-'90s). Many '80s metallers had a tendency to dismiss their lumpen roots in later years; Rob Halford explored Trent Reznor-like industrial music in the wake of Judas Priest, while Tommy Lee went all indie rock and emo on 2005's Tommyland. Dirkschneider is woefully unbound by the tides of taste, however: the gargled, glassy shriek and power chords you hear on Mission No. X ("mission number ten") are precisely the same flourishes he employed when "Balls to the Wall" was on the lips of fashion-challenged headbangers everywhere. Tracks such as "24-7" and "Mean Streets" seem suspended in hard dollops of '80s amber, right down to guitar tone and production value. The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one that had very much fallen by the wayside upon the departure of classic-era singer Michael Kiske and founder/guitarist Kai Hansen in the mid-'90s. We are Fistful of Leaves, California Coast Acoustic Rock from Huntington Beach. Spencer from KJEE says "not sure how many people are in this band.... but my guess is 23!" We'll be driving our Veggie Oil tour-bus and promoting the hell out of our shows. Christian is the lead vocalist/rhythm guitar player in the band. He loves the ocean and spicy food. When not playing you can find him eating, drinking, or sleeping. Scott is an accomplished guitar player and vocalist of the highest caliber. He has played with many bands and FFOL is lucky to have him. He plays everything well. He loves trees and hiding flasks of whiskey outside of concert venues. Matt, the Djembe player, is a native of New York. He has traveled extensively through West Africa, India, and Thailand training on his drum.
