| | Barry White All-Time Greatest Hits CD (1995)
King Hits CD music
$11.99 Barry White's ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS contains the original single versions of his classic solo hits, as well as two songs White performed as the lead vocalist of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. All tracks were previously released on the 20th Century Records label.
All tracks digitally remastered by Gary Mayo (Polygram Studios).
It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White's heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, which actually makes for a more digestible introduction to White's achievements. Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger who'd spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great ...

| | Ne-Yo Year Of The Gentleman CD (2008)
King Hits album
$10.85 The R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and all-around hit-making machine known as Ne-Yo works his magic yet again on YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN. Different from your average R&B crooner of the day, Ne-Yo backs away from overt sexuality, instead aiming for subtle romantic ballads that vary from playful innocence to brooding melancholy. Lead single "Closer" is unique as Ne-Yo works his silky smooth voice over a poppy house track. Overall, YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN is consistent in this respectfully seductive approach to the fairer sex. In "Nobody," an awed Ne-Yo sings the praises of his love interest--"Can't nobody strut like her/Can't nobody touch her"--and the second single, "Miss Independent" is as close to a feminist anthem as the R&B genre has come in years. Production work comes from Polow da Don, Stargate, ...
| | John Legend Evolver CD (2008)
King Hits CD music
$11.75 The third full-length from John Legend finds the neo-soul singer-songwriter mixing it up a bit. Whereas its predecessor, the excellent ONCE AGAIN, stayed the course of smooth yet passionate retro-themed R&B, EVOLVER experiments with different sounds and styles. The lead single, "Green Light," with its amped-up programmed beat, synths, and cameo from Andre 3000, sounds more like a 21st-century club jam than an old-school throwback. Reggae, ballads, adult contemporary, and digitized contemporary R&B all make their way into the album's diverse musical stew. Whether it's the mellow, low-key funk of "It's Over," the synth-pop of "Satisfaction" (one can imagine the song being performed by Depeche Mode), or the guest spots from ...
| | Latin Lingo: Hip Hop From La Raza Vol. 1 CDs (1995)
King Hits music CDs
$9.29 A compilation of Latin hip-hop is an idea whose time has come. Actually, it came some time ago -- kudos to Rhino for being the first to actually do it. Latin rap has been around pretty much as long as rap itself; Latinos were counted among the trendsetting old-school rappers of the late '70s, and modern rappers like Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, and Proper Dos hark back to a tradition started by such early Chicano figures as Ruby D. and Grand Wizard Theodore. But given the proud traditions in which the tunes on this album are steeped, things get off to a kind of dismal start. Opening up with the robotically unfunky "Sumthin Ta Bump" by Proper Dos, Latin Lingo then almost grinds to an aesthetic halt with the smarmy "Ring My Bell," Jew Lay's remake of an old Anita Ward single that raises hardly a glimmer of musical interest. Things pick up quickly from there, however: Kid Frost's masterful "La Raza" kicks all kinds of butt, featuring ...

King Hits album
$13.15 "Uisce" (pronounced "ishka") is the Irish word for water, and the ethereal sound of solo harp often reminds me of the sound of water. This album is a collection of some of my favorite folk tunes I have learned over the years from friends and colleagues in different world traditions, and a few modern compositions by my friend/producer Barry Phillips, a cellist and composer who writes folk and classical music. A lot of the pieces were originally arranged for harp orchestra, and played in the Santa Cruz Harp Festival, an annual event held every Winter Solstice in my hometown of Santa Cruz, California. The Harp Festival is a celebration of world music traditions interpreted through the voice of the harp - an instrument ...
