Weather Report's third album is a clearly defined move into Latin and Brazilian motifs, wah-wah guitar, and synthesizer funk. Mainmen Zawinul and Shorter recruited new percussionists for SWEETNIGHTER, whose well-traveled talents helped to augment the band's already beefy sound. Compositionally, Weather Report was never tighter.
There's a tense wait for the suppressed funk of "Boogie Woogie Waltz" to finally take off, but when it does, with Vitous' bass a fault line of deep groove, Zawinul's electronics mapping out the terrain, and Shorter's sax spewing torrents of hellfire, the release is breathtaking. The climax here is an ecstatic rush of blitzkrieg re-bop. "125th Street Congress" could be Miles Davis' ON THE CORNER part two, sly funk smeared across the greasy keys of Zawinul's synthesizers and Shorter's horns. Go gentle into this SWEETNIGHTER--you won't want to come down when it's all over.
Includes liner notes by John Ephland.
Weather Report includes: Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Miroslav Vitous, Dom Um Romao, Eric Gravatt, Maruga, Andrew White III, Herschel Dwellingham.

Sweetnighter album
$9.44 Here is an overlooked gem from a most unlikely source, recorded in a most unlikely genre -- commercial '70s jazz/funk -- just as the disco era was gathering steam. Tom Scott controlled the production, with Severinsen overdubbing all of the brass choruses and occasionally passing his horns through a phase shifter and wah-wah pedal. The coterie of overworked sessionmen from L.A. and NYC -- Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Lee Ritenour, Anthony Jackson, Ralph MacDonald, etc. -- work this session as you would expect, with the danceable beat always in mind. Yet they pulled off a ...
| | Peter White Glow CD (2001)
Sweetnighter CD music
$7.59 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into ...
| | Sting All This Time CD (2001) Import
Sweetnighter music CDs
$25.59 "All This Time" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
"Whenever I Say Your Name" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "Send Your Love" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
ALL THIS TIME is the live album of Sting's performance in Italy on September 11, 2001.
This import features two cuts left off the American edition--"Mad About You" and "Piece Of My Heart."
On the day that the second live album of Sting's illustrious solo career (and third if you count the Police's 1995 LIVE set) was to be recorded in Tuscany, Italy, the widely respected singer/songwriter/bassist was beset with one of the world's worst horrors of all-time. The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was scrapped except for a single song), resulting in the release of the 15-song ALL THIS TIME, just two short months later. Featured are a trio of Police-era classics inventively re-arranged ("Roxanne," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Every Breath You Take"), plus renditions of such solo selections as the expansive "(If You Love Somebody) Set Them Free," "Brand New Day," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and the poignant folk-like ballad "Fields of Gold."
SACRED LOVE seems like the culmination of a process that began 10 years earlier with Sting's TEN SUMMONER'S TALES album. While his first three solo albums were dense, cerebral affairs, that one began a move towards simplification and broader commercial appeal. While SACRED LOVE's predecessor was perhaps Sting's slickest, most pop-oriented album, this one seems to strike an easy balance between his weighty lyrical concerns and a broad-based, accessible sound.
As on his 1999 hit "Desert Rose," Sting uses world rhythms to spice things up here, employing sitar and Middle Eastern percussion on "The Book of My Life." An undercurrent of the R&B feel of BRAND NEW DAY can still be felt here as well, lending ballast to even his airiest harmonic moments. He even reprises the single "Send Your Love" (initially given worldbeat feel) as a percolating electronic dance track at the album's end, and it's perhaps a tribute to his musical facility that it sounds equally effective.
Recorded on September 11, 2001 in Tuscany, the heartfelt songs performed became more a celebration of life and defiance in the face of tragedy. Each one is completely reworked for the intimate setting in which they were presented.Includes 2 tracks not on the USA version: "Mad About You" & "Shape Of My Heart".
Recorded live at Il Palagio Studios, Italy on September 11, 2001.
Recorded live in Tuscany, Italy.

| | David Gahan Hourglass CD (2007) Digipak
Sweetnighter songs
$16.15 Furthering ANGEL's dark, brooding mood, these songs deftly mix synth-pop and alt-rock with industrial textures, as evinced on the cavernous "Kingdom," which wonderfully utilizes Gahan's deep, resonant voice. Also moving into minimalist/ambient territory on the shimmering, David Sylvian-like "Miracles," HOURGLASS could easily be mistaken for a restless, more experimental DM outing, a concept that Gahan's fans will undoubtedly appreciate.
