Ritual Fires album
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult but ultimately rewarding efforts that came with it. To them, LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA is the big payoff and an instant classic. For the rest of the world, this is that once a decade, perfectly balanced Rammstein album that's immediately accessible but wide and deep enough to explore for years to come.

| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
Ritual Fires CD music
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated arrangement, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and "All For the Glory" and "Lightning Strikes," which are vocal showcases from new guys Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (respectively). Interestingly, both Singer's rasp and Thayer's slightly off-kilter delivery are highly reminiscent of their famous predecessors, which further contributes to the album's distinct Kiss-ness. Overall, though the record doesn't pack quite the same lean, mean, gritty punch as early classics like DESTROYER or KISS (or Ace Frehley's own 2009 album ANOMALY), it is a clear return to the sound ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Ritual Fires music CDs
$12.29 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and Dave Holland has left us, nobody ...
| | Pantera Cowboys From Hell CD (1990)
Ritual Fires songs
$5.75 In the tradition of bands such as Metallica and Judas Priest, Pantera put themselves on the map with supercharged blues-based metal riffs and screaming/singing vocals. Adding groove to their artistic aggression made COWBOYS FROM HELL a landmark for the band.
With the relentless "Primal Concrete Sledge," Pantera take a chance and incorporate industrial elements into their style, a risky move for a metal band in 1990. "Psycho Holiday" showcases machine-gun syncopation while "Heresy" matches thrash riffs with double bass drumming dexterity. The haunting and dramatic "Cemetery Gates" features soulful vocals and was responsible for thrusting Pantera in the metal mainstream. The outro to "Domination" makes use of an infectiously mosh-worthy progression, while a call-and-answer metal/blues riff comprises the hook in "Shattered." Drummer Vinnie Paul has a drum sound that's comparable to that of Lars Ulrich (of Metallica); both of them were heavily imitated in the early '90s. "Clash With Reality" and "Medicine Man" are studies ...
| | Avenged Sevenfold City Of Evil CD (2005)
Ritual Fires album
$9.49 Even though Avenged Sevenfold's first two albums clearly got them lumped into the emo camp, the California quintet always hinted at the heavy metal influence of bands like Iron Maiden. With their major-label debut CITY OF EVIL, not only have they fleshed out these tendencies via the intricate riffing of dual guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, but they've begun to dabble with more intricate, prog-like song structures. And with singer M. Shadows recovering from vocal chord surgery, he employs a considerably more melodic approach.
The first half of CITY cleaves to what longtime fans have come to expect: dive-bombing call-and-response riffing and furious double-bass-drum attacks, peppering cuts like the soaring "Burn It Down" and the equally ferocious "Blinded in Chains." Following the power-ballad tendencies of "Seize the Day," with its subtle piano accompaniment and Shadow's full-bodied crooning, things get really interesting. Song lengths start to hover around the seven-to-nine-minute mark, and intriguing nuances come into play, like the boys' choir and 14-piece string section that defines the epic grandeur of "The Wicked End," and the Latin jam complete with flamenco flourishes ...
