Angie Stone doesn't dabble in anything, but immerses herself deeply in the most soulful musical waters. Stone's songs are as assertive as Mary J. On her third record, STONE LOVE, Stone has truly settled into her groove with a consistently engaging funk-pop collection.
STONE LOVE opens in low-key fashion with a simple, light Jazze Pha production called "I Wanna Thank Ya," which slides into a Snoop Dogg guest rap, before Stone announces the record as truly her own with the unforgettable and smoothly infectious "My Man." The wronged woman showing the door to a cheating man is one of the most thoroughly explored soul themes, but the sly "U-Haul" is one of the finest songs of the sort. On "Stay for a While," Anthony Hamilton's dark, ductile tenor provides the perfect foil, combining with Stone's vocals in the sexiest of duets. On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever it is she wants to with equal verve, authenticity, and flair. Despite the slicker and more diverse sounds on Unexpected, the soul quotient is high, even if this isn't strictly a neo-soul album. The new beat consciousness reveals itself most on the title track, which is hard funk at its 2009 best. Cuts such as "Free" might have come right out of the 1990s with their use of careening synths, shimmering hip-hop beats, and colliding loops. But the melody is solid, its chorus and refrain catchy. Brahms, one of the most popular performers on the vibrant Portland Maine music scene, is releasing her second CD on Cornmeal and her first since 2003’s acclaimed “Green Valentine”. Drawing on the wide variety of influences and styles that have made her a local legend in New England, Brahms returns after a 5 year hiatus with her most powerful work to date. From the swampy rock opener of "Cream Machine" to the plaintive album-closer "Donna", Brahms, who recorded and produced the album in her Portland home with only the assistance of long time collaborator Paul Chamberlain, has never sounded better. A six-time winner of the “Best Female Vocalist and Best Performer” award in her hometown of Portland, Brahms’ distinctive style combined with her high energy live performances have landed her opening slots for the likes of The Violent Femmes, Townes Van Zandt, Daniel Lanois and Ben Harper. She released her first full length solo CD “Hello, Hello To The People” in 1992 and her second, “Little Bundle Of Sugar” (which featured the guitar of Marc Ribot), was released in 2000.
