| | Angie Stone Stone Love CD Angie Stone Discography of CDs
Angie Stone doesn't dabble in anything, but immerses herself deeply in the most soulful musical waters. Stone's songs are as assertive as Mary J. Blige, as directly catchy as anything by Beyonce, and as unpredictable and poetic as Jill Scott. On her third record, STONE LOVE, Stone has truly settled into her groove with a consistently engaging funk-pop collection.
STONE LOVE opens in low-key fashion with a simple, light Jazze Pha production called "I Wanna Thank Ya," which slides into a Snoop Dogg guest rap, before Stone announces the record as truly her own with the unforgettable and smoothly infectious "My Man." The wronged woman showing the door to a cheating man is one of the most thoroughly explored soul themes, but the sly "U-Haul" is one of the finest songs of the sort. On "Stay for a While," Anthony Hamilton's dark, ductile tenor provides the perfect foil, combining with Stone's vocals in the sexiest of duets. With the sweetest and strongest of passions flowing throughout, STONE LOVE furthers Stone's reputation as an assured soul voice.Rolling Stone (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Soulstress Angie Stone makes well-meaning adult-geared R&B, but unlike most of her peers, she injects her music with bawdy bravado." Entertainment Weekly (pp.85-6) - "[I]t sways pleasurably from start to finish, buoyed by floaty old-school R&B..." - Grade: B Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "With each album Stone has grown in confidence, and though this is her most subtle, it's also her most assured." Stone Love album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and ...

| | Angie Stone Unexpected CD (2009)
Stone Love music CDs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever it is she wants to with equal verve, authenticity, and flair. Despite the slicker and more diverse sounds on Unexpected, the soul quotient is high, even if this isn't strictly a neo-soul album. The new beat consciousness reveals itself most on the title track, which is hard funk at its 2009 best. Cuts such as "Free" might have come right out of the 1990s with their use of careening synths, shimmering hip-hop beats, and colliding loops. But the melody is solid, its chorus and refrain catchy. "I Found a Keeper" is another; its production, arrangement, and structure actually feel like it was recorded in the 1990s ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Stone Love songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.

| | Darien Brahms Number 4 CD (2008)
Stone Love music CDs
$14.79 Cornmeal Records is proud to announce the August 18th, 2008 release of "Number 4", the new CD by Darien Brahms. Brahms, one of the most popular performers on the vibrant Portland Maine music scene, is releasing her second CD on Cornmeal and her first since 2003’s acclaimed “Green Valentine”. Drawing on the wide variety of influences and styles that have made her a local legend in New England, Brahms returns after a 5 year hiatus with her most powerful work to date. From the swampy rock opener of "Cream Machine" to the plaintive album-closer "Donna", Brahms, who recorded and produced the album in her Portland home with only the assistance of long time collaborator Paul Chamberlain, has never sounded better. A six-time winner of the “Best Female Vocalist and Best Performer” award in her hometown of Portland, Brahms’ distinctive style combined with her high energy live performances have landed her opening slots for the likes of The Violent Femmes, Townes Van Zandt, Daniel Lanois and Ben Harper. She released her first full length solo CD “Hello, Hello To The People” in 1992 and her second, “Little Bundle Of Sugar” (which featured the guitar of Marc Ribot), was released in 2000. In between, she fronted two rock bands and was the principle songwriter and front woman for the hugely successful Latin-jazz lounge quartet, The Munjoy Hill Society, who released their own CD in 2000 to critical acclaim. More recently she has contributed three tracks to the “Greetings From Area Code 207” benefit CD series, a track to the national compilation, “Calling All Kings And Queens” (on Mr. Lady Records) and also recorded with her honky-tonk alter ego, Darien Brahms and Her Calico Chaps, featuring members of Diesel Doug and The Long Haul Truckers and The Coming Grass.CD Release Party is September 6, 2008 at Space Gallery, Portland MEWhat the critics are saying about Darien Brahms "What a voice Darien Brahms has-- Warm and earthy and full of deep blue intrigue; you hear it once and want to learn any secrets she's telling. You wouldn't want to waste this voice on mundane songs, and that's not the ...
