Husker Du Eight Miles High/Makes No Sense at All CD (1990)
Coleccion Privada "Las 20 Exclusivas" album for sale This EP contains the singles EIGHT MILES HIGH and MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL.
Eight Miles High/Makes No Sense at All combines two singles Hüsker Dü put out when they were at the height of their powers. Their fantastic rendition of "Eight Miles High" was backed with a live version of "Masochism World," and the marvelous "Makes No Sense at All" was backed by Sonny Curtis' "Love Is All Around," the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore show. SST combined both singles into a single release in 1990, available as a 12", CD single, or cassette single. Great stuff. ~ Sean Westergaard
Personnel: Bob Mould (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, percussion, background vocals); Grant Hart (vocals, piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Greg Norton (background vocals).

Fred Waring Broadway Years, Vol. 2 CD (2001)
Coleccion Privada "Las 20 Exclusivas" buy CD music Digitally remastered by George Morrow (Echo productions, Connecticut).
The T.O.M. label presents the second of two volumes devoted to Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. These 24 Victor recordings, made between January 1929 and November 1932, illustrate how this band had traded in most of its earlier collegiate identity for slicker presentation techniques and a repertoire more worthy of the Broadway working environment in which they operated after 1928. The Pennsylvanians often used remarkably complex charts and stunningly inventive vocal arrangements; during their "Broadway" period the band's sound became downright swanky. Quoted in Dizzy Gillespie's autobiography To Be or Not to Bop, saxophonist and arranger Budd Johnson insisted that Fred Waring succeeded during the late '20s and early '30s at least partly thanks to the ingenuity of Afro-American arrangers; this information was never officially documented let alone voiced by Waring, but the jazz-like elements that made the band so terrifically exciting certainly didn't originate in rural Pennsylvania. Paul Mertz is credited with having devised many of their most exciting arrangements, but who else sold charts to Waring? Nobody knows. The vocal stars of this particular album are the three Waring Girls, also known as the "Three Girl Friends." They harmonize like a flock of Nereids during Irving Berlin's "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy," Cole Porter's notorious "Love for Sale" and Vincent Youmans' "Tea for Two," which ends with a flashy flourish after the band suddenly begins to accelerate as if trying to finish the song before the record runs out. After 1932, this group stopped making phonograph records and concentrated on broadcasting live over the radio rather than performing for posterity in the recording studio. Waring, like Irving Berlin a few years earlier and the R.I.A.A. at the beginning of the 21st century, saw technological dissemination of pre-recorded music as a threat rather than a promotional tool; he is said to have deliberately ceased producing records after it occurred to him that the Depression Era audience was hearing his music over the air for nothing rather than investing in the numerous titles listed under his group's name in the Victor catalog. Sadly, most of the records this group cut between 1923 and 1932 would soon fade from memory and are still languishing in obscurity. During the second half of the '30s, Fred Waring became obsessed with the perfection and promotion of the Waring blender. By the time he started making records again, he opted for the sifted, refined, enriched glee club formula with which the name Waring's Pennsylvanians has since been linked. ~ arwulf arwulf
Collection contains works from 1929-32. Waring's back-up band The Pennsylvanians were not a jazz band. The group played theatres & were closer to a cabaret act. They executed written part precisely, but solos are few.
Includes liner notes by Rich Conaty.

Duke Heitger & His Swing Band / Duke Heitger Rhythm Is Our Business CD (2000)
Coleccion Privada "Las 20 Exclusivas" album for sale The 1990s Swing revival has been a mixed blessing for jazz fans; a lot of the practitioners talk the talk, walk the walk and wear the uniforms, but simply don't cut it as songwriters or performers because they rely too heavily on rock and omit any classic material from the genre. In spite of the appearance given by the cover of this CD, this is the Real McCoy. Duke Heitger is a the son of jazz musician Ray Heitger of the Cakewalking Jazz Band in Toledo, Ohio, and the early influences have paid great dividends. Heitger is a first rate trumpeter, leading a group that includes pianist David Boeddignhaus, clarinetist/alto saxophonist/tenor saxophonist Tom Fischer, both of whom have worked with Heitger in Banu Gibson's band. Drummer Chris Tyle is also the cornetist and leader of the Silver Leaf Jazz Band; there are also several notable guests: the brilliant trombonist and arranger Dan Barrett, the popular swing singer Rebecca Kilgore, and reedman Brian Ogilvie, a veteran of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. There's a lot of long forgotten music within this CD, including Duke Ellington's "Swing Pan Alley,"which features Heitger's crisp muted horn and also the maestro's "Stevedore Stomp," highlighted by Barrett's tremendous chops as well as Fischer's clarinet and Ogilvie's solid tenor sax. Swing fans will greatly enjoy this release. ~ Ken Dryden
