| Awesome Album! The Beatles second album in 1963, is a definitive masterpiece! My personal favorite although they didnt write the song is You Really Got a Hold on Me and Not a Second Time is very advanced sounding for 1963 rock music. | The genesis of "A Hard Day's Night" While this album continues the formula for "Please Please Me", by combining some original compositions with covers of other songs, this is the album where the covers were lesser songs than the originals. And this includes such chestnuts as "Roll Over Beethoven", a very popular song with early rock-and-roll fans. Here, the Beatles showed that they made their own songs, and they could make their own stuff better than they could make somebody else's stuff. Indeed, it changed the course of pop music, but it was a breath of fresh air that led to the creative explosion of the sixties, and the rest, as they say, is history. People sometimes slash at these early albums, claiming that they weren't musically or artistically good, but this was ground-breaking stuff back when it was released. People needed to see what they could do with the genre of rock, and these "Beatlemania" albums were the genesis of that. All part of the historical build-up to "Sgt. Pepper" and the cultural "Summer Of Love", as the latter part of the decade was called. Without these early steps, that artistic flowering would not have happened. If you like rock, you might want to pay respects to its origins by buying this album. You might like it. By Galen (Anchorage, AK, USA) This review is for a different format. |
| There was a reason for Beatlemania Considering how huge and influential the Beatles would become in the next few years, this album from 1963 cannot be dismissed. Here they are not as the superstars they would become, but as four very talented young British musicians and you can hear that they are a force to be reckoned with. Not a "boy band" by any means, they were devoted students of the early rock 'n roll giants, while keeping in tune with the changing times and reflected these influences in their finely-crafted songwriting. Flashes of brilliance for McCartney in "All My Lovin" and "Til There Was You", while Lennon's "All I've Got to Do" and especially "Not A Second Time" are hauntingly beautiful. Harrison's lead vocals on "Devil in Her Heart" make it an overlooked classic. The Beatles earned their success, it wasn't handed to them. | far ahead of its time This is the best album ever, not a bad song on here AT ALL! Classic. They put the right songs on this album and released it at the right time, which had secured their fame in England. By Ben (Prince George's County, MD) This review is for a different format. |
| Much better this time "Money (That's What I Want" rocked like crazy on the original LP, but sounded awful on the 1987 CD. It sounds a lot better on the 2009 remaster. My favorite Beatles music came after 1965, so that is enough for me. Buy it. By Jim G. (Springfield, MO) This review is for a different format. |
