| A cannon of a revolver Sgt Pepper, undeniably one of the great albums of all time, put The Beatles in the pantheon of music gods.Previously their albums, excepting Rubber Soul and Revolver, were essentially comprised of "silly love songs". With Revolver, The Beatles set the scene for their major break from earlier writing, musicianship, and production. This is the album that gave birth to Sgt Pepper, and for that, it deserves the title of "My Favourite Album" By R.M.T. (Newcastle, Australia) This review is for a different format. |
| Brilliant collaboration; a turning point in rock music The melancholy "For No One," the biting sarcasm of "She Said, She Said," and some of the best early psychedelia on one album is amazing. The creativity in Revolver is so good it's almost numbing, yet the melodies and vocals are as infectious as ever. A masterpiece. I first heard this album almost 40 years ago; it is as stunning as ever. By garyloewenthal (Falls Church, VA, USA) This review is for a different format. |
| Going the extra mile Certain albums should be exempt from all ratings. "Revolver," like "Kind of Blue" and "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," is one of them. This album is such a cultural landmark that it is senseless to assign it a grade. So the question remains: Why spend $30 for a Japanese pressing whem $15 or so buys the American version. And the answer is as follows: This is indisputably the best-sounding version of this masterpiece. The bass is deeper and more defined; the highs are more open. Everything sounds as it was meant to sound. The Japanese pushed CD mastering as far as it could go in 1987 when this was released and, in my opinion, made a CD that sounded nearly as good as the famed Mobile Fidelity vinyl pressing with half-speed mastering. Yeah, it's time for an updated version--one that surpasses Mobile Fidelity's triumphant version. But if that never happens, you will still hear the "Revolver" of your dreams on this Toshiba version.
