Personnel: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); George Doering, Bryan Sutton (guitar); Geoff Burke, Ned Goold, Bill Liston (alto saxophone); Ernie Watts, Jerry Weldon, Branford Marsalis, Mike Karn (tenor saxophone); Greg Huckins (baritone saxophone); Dave Smith , Joe Magnarelli, John Eckert, Warren Luening, Wayne Bergeron, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Kadleck, John Fumo, Roger Ingram (trumpet); Jeff Bush, Andy Martin, Bill Reichenbach Jr. , Dion Tucker, Stephen Holtman (trombone); Joe Barati (bass trombone); Dan Higgins (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Vincent Caro . Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA; The Music Shed, New Orleans, LA. Photographer: Palma Kolansky. Arranger: Harry Connick, Jr. Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes as Elton John's "Your Song," his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love You So," and the Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Ultimately, YOUR SONG is a classy and feel-good stroll of an album. Relaxing I found this cd to be relaxing, although there really weren’t any surprises with the arrangements. This would be a good cd to add to a playlist when having a nice get together or a romantic dinner. Submitted by Emma (Austin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Harry Signing All of the Songs That I Love I absolutely loved this CD. I have always been a huge fan of Harry as an actor, but never quite grasped his style of music. I did have the pleasure of seeing Harry in concert, but I never really enjoyed his music until now...this new CD. This CD gave me more of an appreciation for his voice and what he is able to do with his voice. Submitted by mommy_resources (Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A little good, a little not so good First of all, I have to say that I am a big fan of Harry Connick Jr. His voice is so smooth and soothing. My two favorite songs on this album are Track 6: Besame Mucho and Track 14: Mona Lisa; I think these were nicely redone and maintain the integrity of the original while bringing a little something new. Unfortunately, there were a couple of songs that just should not have been remade on this album. Track 2: Just the Way You Are and Track 5: Close To You are good examples of this. These are two classic songs that just don't sound quite right remade here. Overall, I don't think it was one of HC Jr's best albums, but if you're a fan of his, then you'll probably still like it. He makes me melt!!! Love the voice!!! I was surprised when I listened to this cd. I do not think that I have heard his music before, and I cannot believe that I have lived without listening to this wonderful voice until now! I just want to melt when I listen to him! The voice just flows right over me, then through me!!! I do not care for a couple of the songs on this cd, but I do not like them no matter who sings them. The cd has a feel of night club type music. This d would be great listening to while doing anything not fun-like the dishes! Would definitely improve my attitude while doing chores! My favorite song is “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”! I also really enjoyed “All the Way”! He is someone that I would enjoy seeing live in concert! Submitted by Animalgal (USA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
