(1 Customer Review)
A mere four months after the release of a covers album, FOR THE LIONS, New Haven's Hatebreed offers their first truly new album in three years. This self-titled offering, the band's fifth, is the first outing to feature both new guitarists--Frank Novinec, who joined in 2006, and newcomer Wayne Lozinak. In addition, drummer Matt Byrne replaced original skin man Rigg Ross, making vocalist Jamey Jasta and bassist Chris Beattie the only two remaining founding members. Despite the lineup shift, the sound is crafted around almost exactly the same formula that has made the band such a sought-after attraction on the metalcore circuit. In the summer of 2009, they shared stages all over the world with Slipknot, Slayer, and Korn, as well as having preferred lineup spots in many music festivals. With this CD, faster, downtuned hardcore is melded to slower, more decidedly doom-laden death metal moments--check the surprisingly retro but utterly killer instrumental "Undiminished"--all played with extreme technical flare, stop-and-start cadences and call-and-response choruses. The rest of these 15 tracks range from headbanging anthems such as the opener, "Become the Fuse," to Hatebreed's trademark, bone-cracking heaviness in "Everyone Bleeds Now," and pummeling riff-laden hardcore in "Merciless Tide." As a bonus, there is an edit of "Escape" tacked on at the end of the set.

Hatebreed
$10.39 Principally recorded at The Theater Studio & Mindswerve, New York, New York.
Mindless Self Indulgence's brilliantly named The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy collects more of the group's outré, hip-hop-tinged industrial thrash. Singer Urine's bizarre falsetto sounds like a sped-up Jello Biafra, especially on tracks like "Boomin'" and "I Hate Jimmy Page." The album's 30 songs -- which sport titles like "Dicks Are for My Friends," "Cocaine and Toupees," "Faggot," and "Royally Fucked" -- are all pretty much slight variations on the group's fast-and-shocking style. Though The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy doesn't quite deliver on the sleazy humor of its title, Mindless Self Indulgence does provide a quick, sensationalistic fix for fans of groups like Insane Clown Posse or A.C. ~ Heather Phares

| | Joe Bonamassa Had To Cry Today CD (2004)
Hatebreed
$13.79 Blues-rock guitar wizard Joe Bonamassa can make a set of electric six-strings burn and wail, but like many such guitarists, he still requires focus for it to be truly special. Such intense focus is a hallmark of HAD TO CRY TODAY. While some guitarists squander notes, Bonamassa makes each one count whether he's engaging in country-flavored picking (the late, great Danny Gatton was clearly an influence), blistering rock-edged blues, or turbulent, inspired jamming. TODAY delivers on Bonamassa's previous promise in a big way.
Personnel: Joe Bonamassa (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jon Paris (harmonica); Benny Harrison (Hammond b-3 organ); Eric Czar (bass guitar); Kenny Kramme (drums, percussion).

| | Hatebreed Supremacy CD (2006)
Hatebreed
$15.05 Metalcore quartet Hatebreed moved to the Roadrunner label for their fifth full-length, SUPREMACY, but they stuck to the sound fans love: punishing punk-metal delivered in 30-second blasts. Hatebreed's music isn't built on subtlety or variation, but that isn't what the group is about. Jamey Jasta's fierce, machine-gunning vocals are backed by a brutal metallic onslaught that seems intent on flattening everything in sight. SUPREMACY doesn't deliver anything new, but for lovers of head-crushing, fist-pumping metalcore that's a very good thing.

| | Five Finger Death Punch Way Of The Fist CD (2007)
Hatebreed
$14.65 As its name indicates, Five Finger Death Punch packs a serious sonic wallop. On WAY OF THE FIST, the band offers up its appealing brand of metal, which moves between hardcore, ominous black metal, and melodic metal a la System of a Down or Alice in Chains. Tunes like the opener "Ashes" and "Salvation" are cases in point, alternating pummeling, in-your-face verses with winding, hooky choruses. WAY OF THE FIST rocks hard, and--with its sense of variety-- should appeal to metalheads of many stripes.

| | Hatebreed For The Lions (Future Shop) CD (2009)
Hatebreed
$14.29 Modern metalcore came from a bubbling cauldron of classic hardcore punk, thrash metal, and various shades of crossover, so it's fitting that one of the genre's leading lights is paying tribute to the original songs and artists that helped form them. FOR THE LIONS shows stalwart hardcore brutes Hatebreed in their usual industrial-strength heavy mode, playing covers of punk, hardcore, and metal songs from influences like Black Flag, Bad Brains, Sick of It All, and the Misfits (whose "Hatebreeders," covered here, gave the band their name.) The band largely eschews the obvious songs in favor of some big bands' lesser-known tracks. Their ferocious take on Slayer's "Ghosts of War" is a natural fit for Hatebreed, and Metallica's "Escape" gives the band a chance to inject a little melody into the mix. Some songs, like Cro-Mags' "It's the Limit" and Madball's "Set it Off," draw a direct line to Hatebreed's own sound.
| | Frank Stallone In Love In Vain CD (1999)
Hatebreed
$11.42 Frank Stallone switches gears on In Love in Vain, abandoning his pop/rock style to come on as a Frank Sinatra-style traditional pop singer. Stallone, an accomplished character actor, has studied the styles of Sinatra and especially Bobby Darin, and he avoids the usual mistakes made by rock singers trying to handle this kind of material. In particular, he knows to swing the rhythm rather than hitting every beat spot-on, and he works well with the orchestra led by Sammy Nestico. He has a smooth low tenor that allows him to evoke Darin during "Beyond the Sea (La Mer)" and also the late-'50s Sinatra of "Witchcraft." Stallone's live performances no doubt please audiences. On record, the question is more problematic, if only because the re-creation he is attempting is less necessary. One can simply listen to Sinatra and Darin records instead of this earnest copy. Essentially, Stallone here is doing another acting job, and though he does it well for the most part, it's hard to say why someone would rather hear him than the original. Just as he doesn't get the names of the songwriters correct, consistently listing Richard Rodgers as "Rogers," he misses nuances in the lyrics that would suggest he was feeling the meanings independently and not through the filter of an earlier singer. Stallone's entry into traditional pop is welcome, but he might be better advised to seek out less familiar material (such as the title song) that he could put his own stamp on. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Cavo Bright Nights, Dark Days CD (2009)
Hatebreed
$9.69 When a band sticks it out year after year, putting in the time and the miles, its eventual success seems to mean a little more than that of a teenage flash in the pan. BRIGHT NIGHTS AND DARK DAYS reveals the fruits of veteran St. Louis rock combo Cavo's labor, delivering a muscular, direct brand of alternative-tinged hard rock performed with integrity and an easy-going confidence. Throughout, there are echoes of rockers of yore, from U2 and `80s-era Rush on "Cry Wolf" to Motley Crue and Led Zeppelin's "Trampled Under Foot" on the driving "Blame."
