Confederate Railroad may be a Southern rock band, but on his own, keyboard player Cody McCarver aims at the mainstream of contemporary country on his self-titled album. McCarver has a resonant tenor-baritone and a Tennessee Southern accent, and the songs sound like Hank Williams, Jr. castoffs, full of braggadocio ("Country Badass" is one title) and tough-guy heartbreak. His only songwriting contribution is the leadoff track, "Through God's Eyes," which has the advantage of some real autobiography (like one of the characters in it, McCarver's father was jailed for murdering his wife's lover), but still comes across as simpleminded Southern homespun philosophy. Recording at the Capitol Tower in Los Angeles, McCarver does give his take to some slightly pop-oriented material, including the celebrity-conscious "Sunset Boulevard" and two songs directly adapted from the pop/rock realm. He's one for two in those selections. "Chosen One," aka the theme from The Sopranos, with its opening lines, "Woke up this morning/Got yourself a gun," seems custom-made for a country treatment and works well. But Rod Stewart's icky '70s seduction ballad "Tonight's the Night" is no less icky as sung by McCarver. That's it for the innovations here. But this album serves as a reminder that, anytime Toby Keith gets tired of working, there's someone waiting in the wings. ~ William Ruhlmann

Cody Mccarver album
$9.29 Still Restless is the first album of all new studio material in 14 years by Restless Heart. Little has changed since their self-titled debut album was released in 1985; their perfect harmonies and smooth country-rock arrangements remain intact. Basically, Restless Heart picked up where they left off in the mid-'90s, sticking with their strong points instead of radically changing their musical direction. Highlights include the mandolin-dominated "Feel My Way to You," the soft rock, melancholic ballad "Miracle," and a cover of the Beatles' "The ...

Cody Mccarver CD music
$7.59 The fact that Crowell covers a Bob Dylan song here (a lovely take on "Shelter from the Storm," rendered as a duet with Emmylou Harris) is not coincidental. The influence of Dylan hangs heavy in Crowell's songwriting, from his critiques of consumer culture ("The Obscenity Prayer") to his moments of personal revelation ("Beautiful ...

| | John "Juke" Logan Truth Will Rock You CD (2005)
Cody Mccarver album
$12.85 JOHN "JUKE" LOGAN has, on multiple occasions over the past two decades, been the harmonica-player-of-choice for RY COODER, LOS LOBOS, ETTA JAMES, BO DIDDLEY, JOHN LEE HOOKER, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, DAVE ALVIN, LEON RUSSELL, films such as "CROSSROADS" (the Walter Hill feature about the blues) & "MIDNIGHT RUN", & TV shows such as "ROSEANNE" & "HOME IMPROVEMENT" & many others. LOGAN'S original compositions have been covered by many, recorded by the likes of JOHN MAYALL, The PALADINS & GARY PRIMICH, used by film & TV & honored with commentary like: "he's the Willie Dixon of the 90's & beyond... just listen to the lyrics" (-"Squrl", KMCQ Oregon). Juke's radio show (with co-host Ellen bloom), The FRIDAY NIGHT BLUES BEVUE, ran for 8 years on KPCC & was one of Southern California's most popular public radio roots-music programs. JUKE'S previous two albums, The CHILL (Razor & Tie, '92), & JUKE RHYTHM (Mocombo, '98) (both released in Europe on Virgin) were called "groove-filled blasts" (-Album Network),and were comprised entirely of his original songs, & prompted observations like, "Logan's pushing off in directions where few in blues have gone... makes the term 'multi-cultural', as it applies to blues, seem not only possible, but logical... the right ...
