Alef-Bet album
$13.59 Actor and musician Theodore Bikel had already established himself as a major talent with a series of ethic folk albums in which he interpreted traditional Yiddish and Hebrew songs, but he enjoyed his first major critical and commercial success on record with a pair of Russian folk collections: 1958's Songs of a Russian Gypsy and 1960's Songs of Russia Old & New. Out of print for some time, Bikel's Russian LPs make their belated CD debut in this two-fer edition from Collectors Choice Music. Oddly, the first and livelier of the two albums, Songs of a Russian Gypsy, takes up the second half of the set, while the more varied follow-up, Songs of Russia Old & New, opens the show, though the sequence does make for a rousing finish, and the albums play quite well as a set -- the same cast of musicians appears on both, lending fine support to Bikel's powerful vocals, and the drama and emotional force of the material is well served on both albums. The greatest strength of these recordings is, of course, Bikel's striking performances, which are emotional without becoming melodramatic, and are so pitch-perfect in their strength of feeling that one doesn't need to understand Russian to register the joys and agonies of these songs. Significantly recorded when America was hip-deep in the Cold War, Bikel's Russian albums spoke volumes for the humanity of the Soviet proletariat at a time when most folks in the West regarded them as an enemy to be feared, and the artistry of these 28 songs is a joy to behold. The set also includes a ...

| | Klezmatics Brother Moses Smote The Water CD (2005)
Alef-Bet music CDs
$19.15 The Klezmatics are arguably the most genre-bending performers on the klezmer scene today (and perhaps of any day). Here, they combine with an up-and-coming singer from the South. That singer just happens to be of an ancient order of Judaism and is African-American, and he attempts to fuse gospel soul with traditional Jewish works. Of course, they got along marvelously. The album focuses on the similarities and ties between Jews and blacks, particularly in the aspects of slavery, the shared songs from Passover and gospel services, and the vibrant cultures. There are notes of pure klezmer and of pure gospel, but the concert from which the album was recorded is really a masterpiece of fusion. The styles are crunched together nearly seamlessly, the languages used (alternately Hebrew, Yiddish, and English) being the only differential in some parts. Joshua Nelson (the gospel singer) tends toward a Mahalia Jackson sound, and the Klezmatics themselves do what they always do. Slapped together, it's a joyous, powerful affair. For fans of musical cross-pollination, this album is a godsend. It's cross-cultural fusion done right. For an added bonus, the CD includes a short bit of video footage from the Berlin concert. ~ Adam Greenberg

Alef-Bet album
$44.25 As half of the NYC underground-legend production team DFA, James Murphy was responsible for countless crafty retoolings of late-1970s/early-'80s sounds of the electroclash/post-punk-revival variety. Wearing his "artist" hat under the LCD Soundsystem moniker, Murphy concocted his own minimal-synth club hits, full of both hipster irony ("Losing My Edge") and catchy electro-hooks ("Yeah").
Finally unleashed for the length of a full album, Murphy's muse still offers up plenty of John-Foxx-will-rise-again retro synth sounds, but he expands his palette as well. The irresistibly catchy "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" is a funky, riff-driven party-starter that compares favorably to vintage Beck, and "On Repeat" indicates a fascination with the lyrical cadences of the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Moving further back in time to the art-rock era, "Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up" is a dreamy tune that could have slipped unnoticed off Pink Floyd's MEDDLE, and "Great Release" is an unabashed, slow-building Eno homage. To keep the club kids happy, a bonus disc featuring LCD's previous singles (including the aforementioned faves) ...
