| | Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood CD Motley Crue Discography of CDs
Additional personnel includes: Steven Tyler, Bryan Adams, Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Skid Row (background vocals).
Principally recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios, Vancouver, Canada in 1989. Includes liner notes by Alan K. Stout.
Motley Crue's biggest seller, DR. FEELGOOD is the best example of Beyond Music's CRUCIAL CRUE series reissue of the band's catalog. A meaty and in-your-face digitally remastered sound, with added extras of four demos and a hitherto-unreleased track, improve this title greatly. Superlative liner notes are also included.
Riding a string of platinum releases, Motley Crue here employed producer Bob Rock to help achieve the blockbuster sound that accompanied their glam metal image; the title track kicks in with a ferocity not heard since SHOUT AT THE DEVIL. Drummer Tommy Lee's shuffle propels "Kickstart My Heart," while singer Vince Neil wails to good effect on the radio-friendly "Without You." Crowd favorite "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" sensitively explores lesbianism, while the politically incorrect "She Goes Down" features guest vocals by Cheap Trick's Robin Zander. Although album closer "Time for Change" proposes a better future through social action, don't look for a deep message on DR. FEELGOOD. This is perfect pop metal.
2009 deluxe edition of their 1989 No.1 album. Includes the original album plus demos & live tracks from their 89-90 world tour. 20 tracks
Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals, shaker); Mick Mars (guitar, background vocals); Nikki Sixx (piano, organ, bass, background vocals); Tommy Lee (drums, percussion, background vocals).

Dr. Feelgood
$9.55 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, ...

| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Dr. Feelgood
$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. If you like this sort of thing (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, After Forever, Leaves' Eyes, etc., etc.), or if you're a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, this ...
| | Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer CD (2009)
Dr. Feelgood
$11.59 Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with a James Hetfield-approved combination of sensitive angst and macho defiance. First single "Hard to See" backs a catchy, harmony-vocal laden melody with a syncopated groove so rhythmically engaging it could almost be called funky, while the closing track "War is the Answer" takes a classic-sounding headbanging riff seemingly straight out of the Anthrax songbook and uses it to drive home one of several ultra-aggressive sentiments ("to me you're just a cancer/war is the answer"). Elsewhere, Five Finger Death Punch delves into somewhat more diverse sonic territory; "Bulletproof" combines a throbbing industrial feel reminiscent of late-period Ministry with Yngwie Malsteen-esque melodic shred guitar solos and a vocal hook that recalls the `80s pop-prog of Asia and GTR, while "Far From Home" is a straight-up power ballad, complete with dramatic strings and a soaring chorus ...
| | Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect CD (2009)
Dr. Feelgood
$11.49 After Between the Buried and Me pushed metalcore purists away with their most progressive release, COLORS, they decided to push even harder for their fifth release. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into only six songs, THE GREAT MISDIRECT is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, and extremely difficult listen. Briggs, Waring, Rogers, Waggoner, and Richardson are in top form, with their script-flipping abilities intact and their technical chops at their most extreme. This is a guitarists' album first and foremost (although bass players and drummers are in for a treat, as well), and the playing, while showy, is incendiary. Like a cross between Dream Theater (whom they toured with in 2008) and Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me meld creative aptitude and roaring fury as they skate genres, stapling together speed metal, hardcore, carnival jazz, chamber pop, and a few indefinable Mike Patton-esque styles. "Fossil Genera -- A Feed from Cloud Mountain" fuses loungy Henry Mancini piano with metal guitar and guttural growls in a lighthearted way, but this only lasts for a few minutes; the song takes a dark turn into eight minutes of screaming speed metal before seguing into an epic orchestral outro with syrupy singing by vocalist Tommy Rogers. To fit the many moods, Rogers readily switches moods between painful howls and heartfelt singing (with lyrics mainly dealing with alien abductions, the inner workings of the human brain, and magic), but he ...
| | Genitorturers Blackheart Revolution CD (2009)
Dr. Feelgood
$10.50 Ignore the pseudo-provocative image and whatever you've heard about the stage show, and how does Genitorturers' latest album stack up as music? Surprisingly well -- or maybe not so surprisingly, considering that they've been around since the '90s and should probably be expected to know what they're doing. The big problem is that they're out of time, musically speaking. Their blend of industrial dance and metal had its moment a decade or so ago, and to keep plowing that black-leather-clad groove in 2009 pretty much guarantees a cult audience of equally die-hard listeners, and no one else. "Devil in a Bottle" sounds exactly like a Rob Zombie song, and he's another one whose failure to evolve has hurt his art. Even when they try to do something else, as on the heavy alt rock semi-anthem "Falling Stars," the mix of '60s rhythm (including tambourine) and less-distorted-than-usual guitars reeks of the '90s. Anybody remember the Nymphs? Genitorturers do, apparently. And the less said about the retro techno track "Cum Junkie," the better. Vocalist Gen has ...
