It might be a strange title given the album was recorded in Mississippi, but then again, calling it West Coast after the river's geography would be a little misleading (and more to the point, would actually be about Louisiana). A quick blast of nine entertaining songs, West Coast shows that Junk Culture aka Deepak Mantena actually has an ear for that kind of mythic (and often heavily Beach Boys-informed) place celebrated by acts from as far afield as the High Llamas as much as onsite performers with their own style like Spirit, a location of the mind that is constantly breezy and airy. Crucially, however, Junk Culture doesn't re-create endless sessions of Smile so much as pulverize and rework them -- songs like the title track chop up bursts of vocal sweetness and uplifting melodies over breaks and beats, not revelatory in terms of new sampling approaches by any means, but perfectly accomplished at setting a slightly unexpected mood. Sometimes the results are pleasant, other times there's an actual sense of full drama, as on "American Minute Song" when a few whispers of "Check...check..." eventually lead into a fuller break. A quiet sense of humor doesn't hurt -- thus, naming what sounds like a slightly woozy gamelan break "For Elise" as a reference to the Beethoven piano classic, though heaven knows what the classical performer might think of it. (Also, points for having a song called "Carmel Valley Girls" that sounds like a random anime robot lost in a weird underground tunnel -- simply because that's probably the most un-Carmel Valley-like setting possible). ~ Ned Raggett

West Coast album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, ...

| | Ben Frost By The Throat CD (2009)
West Coast album
$14.29 With 2007's Theory of Machines, composer Ben Frost combined academically constructed electro-acoustic music, doom metal, post-rock drones, and minimal classical touches with strings and piano. It was a difficult yet clearly intoxicating listening experience. The melding of clinical technology and human elements -- i.e., real instruments -- as a way of bringing the listener in made it nearly unbearable, but so utterly original that it compelled one to engage it. The only act close to this was Coil at their early best. By the Throat is, if anything, even more so, though the manner of construction is very different -- even if many of the same elements are used. This time the approach -- which is clear by the title and the pack of wolves in a snowstorm on the cover -- is in reverse. On By the Throat he uses far more organic textures as a base, whether they be from animal or human worlds, layering electronics and other effects atop them. There are real melodies at work in most of these pieces, and because there are, when harsh industrial noise, metallic guitars, and the sounds of wolves themselves are placed atop gentle ambient drones, strings, piano, dulcimers, and other acoustic instruments, the effect is simply nail-bitingly harrowing. Take the opening track, "Killshot." Minimal synth textures establish a skeletal melodic pattern for 30 seconds before a wave of gated -- and harsh -- sonic waves overshadow them completely for a few moments, and then they poke through over and again. It's like a Philip Glass-styled melodic fragment that refuses to die no matter what is placed on top of it. Dulcimer touches and a piano slip in and out melismatically, but amid the gargantuan swells of noise, it becomes creepy; disturbing but beautiful.
