Personnel: Bob Minner (acoustic guitar); Denny Hemingson (electric guitar, steel guitar); Darran Smith (electric guitar); Dean Brown (mandolin, fiddle); Jeff McMahon (piano, Wurlitzer organ, synthesizer); Billy Mason (drums); David Dunkley (congas, percussion). Audio Mixers: Tim McGraw; Byron Gallimore. Photographer: Danny Clinch. Based on title alone, it would seem that SOUTHERN VOICE picks up on the harder country edges of LET IT GO, but that's not the case: this is Tim McGraw's rockiest album yet, opening with a slow, spacy crawl called "Still" that would not be out of place on a record by a U2 knockoff and taking the occasional detour to Nickelback territory on the Chad Kroeger co-written "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You." That tune bristles with Kroeger's barely veiled, unwitting hostility, something that the big-hearted McGraw doesn't wear well and it's something he wisely side-steps on the rest of the record, choosing to mine a sentimental, meditative vein, musing on major changes in his life and wondering what will happen after he's gone. Such big themes fit both the big, atmospheric rock sounds and the reflective acoustic ballads well, creating an inward vibe that is occasionally punctuated by a rocker, like the laundry list of great Southern names on the title track.Entertainment Weekly (p.58) - "McGraw clearly knows his country touchstones, spinning vivid tales from both the Good Book and jailbird dads." -- Grade: B Billboard (p.32) - "Standout tracks include 'Ghost Town Train,' which echoes the work of Glen Campbell, and 'Good Girls,' a dark tale of cheating with an unexpected twist." Southern Voice
$16.15 Personnel: Bob Minner, Byron Gallimore (acoustic guitar); Denny Hemingson, Darren Smith (electric guitar); Dean Brown (fiddle); Jeff McMahon (Hammond b-3 organ); John Marcus (bass instrument); Billy Mason (drums); David Dunkley (percussion); Greg Barnhill, Wes Hightower, Russell Terrell (background vocals). Additional personnel: Faith Hill (vocals). On his first album in nearly three years, Tim McGraw delivers more of the rock-influenced country that has made him one of Nashville's biggest stars, but in a more reflective, at times almost somber, mood. The title track sets a tone of heartbreak and unspecified desperation that's amplified through the album's other 12 songs. Even the traditional duet with McGraw's wife, the eternally sunny Faith Hill, is darker than usual: "I Need ...

| | Martina Mcbride Shine CD (2009)
Southern Voice
$11.39 Personnel: Martina McBride (vocals). On her ninth studio album (her first since 2007's WAKING UP LAUGHING), country singer Martina McBride teams with hot Nashville producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts) for a subtle updating of her tried and true sound. The guitars are a little louder and more rock-oriented on songs like the first single, "Ride," and the rollicking opener, "Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong," but McBride's soul remains true to her Grand Ole Opry roots, keeping things from straying too far into crossover territory. Highlights include "Sunny Side Up" (the album's sole songwriting credit for McBride) and the sweet "I Just Call You Mine." Shine is Martina McBride's first recording in two years, following up her successful album Waking Up Laughing. While the previous album was entirely ...
| | Brad Paisley American Saturday Night CD (2009)
Southern Voice
$13.59 Audio Remasterer: Hank Williams. An American saturday night is not an unusual topic for a country song but Brad Paisley's celebration is. Paisley sees a typical weekend night as a cultural collision of French kisses, Italian Ices, Canadian bacon and margaritas, a place where Mexican and Dutch beers chill side by side in a bucket of ice. If he leans too heavily on labels, referring to those beers by brand name, it's merely a reflection of Paisley's uncanny knack for capturing the casual contemporary details of American life at the tail end of the 2000s. It's not just the pile up of iPhones and international video chats on "Welcome to the Future," the first country anthem of the Obama era, it's how he'll pick up prescription for his girl and flips macho stereotypes on their head on "The Pants." He's a thoroughly modern man and that attitude helps invigorate ...
