(1 Customer Review)
Photographers: Jean-Baptiste; Herb Ritts; Wayne Maser. CELEBRATION, Madonna's fourth major hits collection, has the Herculean task of summing up 30 years of chart-topping pop music by one of the true visionary artists of the era. The 18 songs are tilted toward her good-time dancefloor classics, both from her early days ("Holiday," "Into the Groove") and her later techno-influenced songs ("Hung Up," "Ray of Light"). It also adds a newly recorded track, "Celebration," produced with Paul Oakenfold. The only track that comes close to balladry is the mid-tempo Latin groove, "La Isla Bonita." The collection does a fine job of living up to the title--it's certainly a celebration of Madonna's career and includes some of the most celebratory and thrilling pop music ever created. Madonna's run at the top of the charts lasted so long, longer than almost any other star, it's almost impossible to squeeze all the hits onto one collection. And so it is that Celebration, a double-disc, 36-track set that also has a companion single-disc condensation, misses a few songs, hits as gorgeous as "Rain" and as goofily camp as "Hanky Panky," but truth be told, they're not greatly missed on this parade of pop genius that's hampered only slightly by its non-chronological order. Out of order, it does emphasize Madonna's consistency, and the bigger problem with the collection is that it mixes up album mixes, single edits, Q-Sound mixes pulled from The Immaculate Collection, and a couple of stray odd edits and mixes. This is a mess, but not quite enough to dilute what is one of the greatest bodies of work in modern pop -- even in this mixed-up confusion, these singles are a joy to hear. ~ Stephen Thomas ErlewineRolling Stone (p.74) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "CELEBRATION kicks off with pure bliss and never lets up. It's a dizzying, non-chronological spin through the Madonna years, years it makes you feel lucky to be living through." Entertainment Weekly (p.56) - "36 tracks covering nearly every phase of her 25-year career. It all holds up surprisingly well." -- Grade: B Madonna Celebration Songs | | Celebration CD DISC 1: |

| | Blondie Greatest Hits CD (2006)
Celebration
$9.99 19 Classic Cuts
Blondie: Deborah Harry (vocals); Chris Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri. Producers: Mike Chapman, Giorgio Moroder, Richard Gottehrer, Craig Leon. Compilation producer: Kevin Flaherty. Recorded between 1977 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Steve Pafford. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Photographers: Adrian Boot; Ebet Roberts; Pieter Mazél; Armando Gallo; Bob Gruen; Duncan Raban; Fin Costello; Robert Roth. Most devoted Blondie fans will already have the majority of the songs included on the first disc of this double-disc set. Alongside the band's biggest hits--"Heart of Glass," "Tide is High," "Call Me," and "Rapture"--GREATEST HITS also includes favorites like "One Way or Another" and "Sunday Girl" and lesser-known gems like "Picture This" and "Union City Blue." But the real benefit of this package comes with disc number two, which features 15 videos of the band in its prime. For fans who never got to see Blondie back in the day, the "vision" portion of this SOUND & VISION set is invaluable, lending a filmic dimension to the band's glamorous blend of punk, new wave, disco, and irresistible pop. Greatest Hits distinguishes itself from the other Blondie compilations (of which there are several) by adding a DVD that contains 16 (all?) of the group's videos. A couple inconsequential remixes appear where original versions or other career highlights should be present, but otherwise, the audio disc does a fair job, even though it's basically retracing the steps of the compilations that came before it. Most of the essential material is here ("Heart of Glass," ...

The compilation covers all phases of Olivia Newton-John's career, from her early years of country-tinged AM pop to her time in the pop spotlight with Grease and Xanadu and all the way to her more recent adult contemporary works with Diane Warren, Babyface, and Elton John. Though die-hard fans might find a favorite omitted, this is only a slight misstep and chances are they already ...

| | Ed Alkalay Turning Dorian Gray CD (2001)
Celebration
$10.65 Ed Alkalay is a New York City (by way of Washington, D.C.) singer and songwriter who sounds pretty convincingly rural for a guy from the Big City. With its emphasis on acoustic instruments and periodic accents from Alkalay's banjo, Turning Dorian Gray is folk-rock that puts the focus squarely on the former rather than the latter, and his songs find a middle ground between the intelligent introspections of Chris Smither and the grittier storytelling of Greg Brown. Alkalay isn't an exceptional vocalist, but he's able to get his material over effectively, and his songs tell concise but compelling stories with well-drawn, believable characters. At the same time, there isn't an awful lot on Turning Dorian Gray that really sets Ed Alkalay apart from dozens of other singer/songwriters mining similar territory (and the album's slightly drab production hardly helps), but the best tunes -- particularly "One Last Minute" and the title cut -- cut just deep enough to make it clear he's a few notches up on his competition. Turning Dorian Gray shows Ed Alkalay to be a good songwriter who, with a bit of seasoning and the right amount of editing, could have an exceptional record in him one day. ~ Mark Deming
“The best painters never waste a stroke, the best directors never waste a scene, and Ed Alkalay's way with words places him in the upper echelon of modern bards." --Justin Kownacki, Splendidezine.comIn 2009, Ed released his 3rd CD, I Hate You, of original roots music. The songs range from rock (“You”) to alt-country (“Texas”) to blues (“One More Time”) to comedy (“That Girl’s Gonna Make a Woman Out of Me”) to roots rock (“I Hate You”). A few years ago, Ed moved to the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire where he currently lives a quiet life with his family. He continues to write music and record, and he performs live occasionally. A summary of his musical career breaks down as follows: 2005 to present: These days Ed focuses most of his musical hours on songwriting and recording. Ed’s 3rd CD, I Hate You, has just been released. He is currently composing songs based on poetry of W.B. Yeats, Edgar Allen Poe, and Dorothy Parker, among others.1998 to 2004: Ed was very active in the Washington, D.C./Virginia music scene, writing and performing original roots music as a solo artist, with his band, Liquid Poodle, and as a duo with talented singer/guitarist Jack Gregori. Ed released his 2nd CD, Turning Dorian Gray, in 2002. His song “Texas” was featured on the Focus Compilation of songwriters in the DC/Virginia/Maryland area. While living in D.C., Ed also studied composition with Anthony Stark, and has composed several art songs, a fugue for string orchestra, and a piece for string quartet.1993 to 1998: During these years, Ed lived and performed in New York City as a solo artist and with musical partner Pat Almonrode. He was active in the Fast Folk songwriting group in New York City and his song “I Never Rode a Freight Train” was included on the Fast Folk CD “New Voices in NYC”. Ed also released his first CD, Diamond Chain, during this period.1991-1992: While getting started as a songwriter, Ed performed as a street musician in and around Boston, and performed regularly at the clubs and original music bars and coffee houses in the Boston area.* * * * * * * *Ed’s music influences range from rock, country-blues, and folk to classical. Over the past fifteen years, Ed has performed at many venues along the east coast, and has ventured inland as far as Nashville to perform his original brand of roots music. His songs have received airplay all over the world and he has received numerous songwriting awards. Ed is also an accomplished instrumentalist - garnering praise for his deft instrumental ability on electric and acoustic ...
| | Tanglefoot Dance Like Flames CD (2006) (Import) Canada
Celebration
$16.29 Tanglefoot certainly have a history, and something of a revolving door policy when it comes to membership. Think of them as a Canadian folk-rock band with a good sense of the past and you're hitting close to the mark. There's an ongoing sense of discovery about their homeland in their work, as on "Boot Soup." Fiddler and singer Sandra Swanell brings a light touch to the group that's very welcome and shows herself to be no mean player when she lets fly. However, while they have a number of good qualities, it's difficult to get too worked up about this disc. At times the songwriting seems a little more academic than heartfelt, and even at its best, with "Paddle Like Hell," the music never quite takes off for the stratosphere. Still, they've essentially become an institution, ...
